What is it?

Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in the Eurasian golden oriole (Oriolus oriolus), a wild insectivorous bird sometimes brought to wildlife care centers or kept in aviaries. Cylindrical worms called nematodes settle in the bird's intestines and disrupt digestion. The disease mainly affects young birds, weakened individuals, or those living in high-density conditions, such as in captivity or at wildlife rehabilitation centers.

These parasites belong to several families, including Ascaridida and Capillaria, which are found in many wild and captive bird species. Infection can remain mild in a healthy oriole but may become severe in a nestling, a stressed bird, or an immunocompromised individual.

Signs are often subtle at first. Progressive weight loss may be seen despite sometimes preserved appetite, dull and ruffled plumage, diarrhea or loose droppings, and sometimes abdominal bloating. The bird becomes sluggish and less active, and may show stunted growth if young. In heavy infestations, worms may be visible in the droppings. Vomiting or regurgitation is possible if parasites migrate toward the proventriculus (the glandular stomach of birds). Dehydration develops in advanced cases.

Causes and risk factors

Infection is caused by intestinal nematodes whose life cycle may be direct—the bird becomes infected by ingesting parasite eggs present in the environment—or indirect, through an intermediate host such as an insect that the oriole consumes as part of its naturally insectivorous diet. Parasite eggs, which are very resistant, contaminate soil, feeders, or aviaries where sanitation is poor.

Young orioles, still developing immune competence, are more vulnerable. Prolonged captivity, overcrowding in aviaries or care centers, an environment soiled by droppings, stress from capture or transport, and poor-quality nutrition all favor the establishment and multiplication of parasites.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis is based on microscopic examination of the droppings, called fecal flotation, which detects parasite eggs. The veterinarian may also examine worms directly if the bird regurgitates them or passes them in its feces. In some cases, a blood test or assessment of the bird's overall condition completes the evaluation to determine the severity of the infestation and its impact on the body.

Treatment

Treatment consists of administering antiparasitic medications appropriate for birds, chosen and dosed solely by a veterinarian specializing in wildlife or exotic animals. Nutritional support and rehydration may be necessary as supplements in weakened individuals.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Good aviary and feeder hygiene significantly reduces the risk. Regular cleaning of the floor and surfaces, avoiding overcrowding, and routine parasite screening in captive birds or in care facilities are recommended. For a wild oriole that has been brought in, a fecal examination (fecal flotation) upon arrival allows detection of infestation before it worsens.

Possible complications

A massive untreated infestation can cause intestinal obstruction, severe weight loss, significant dehydration, and in young or already weakened individuals, a risk of death.

The bird is losing weight despite apparently normal appetite.

Worms are visible in the droppings.

The oriole shows persistent diarrhea or abdominal bloating.

The bird becomes unusually lethargic or depressed.

A young oriole shows stunted growth or dull plumage.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally favorable if the infestation is detected early and treated by a veterinarian competent in wild birds. Advanced cases, especially in young or already weakened birds, may be more severe and require prompt management.
