Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common infestation in grey wolves, both in the wild and in captivity.
The parasites responsible mainly belong to the ascarid family (such as Toxocara canis) and the hookworm family (such as Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala).
These worms live in the animal's intestines and feed at its expense, which can cause digestive problems and general weakness.

In wolf pups, a swollen, hard abdomen (sometimes called a "pot belly"), diarrhea sometimes tinged with blood, vomiting, and stunted growth compared with littermates are often seen.
The coat becomes dull and the animal may appear tired and less active than its pack mates.
In adults, infestation is often less obvious: it may go unnoticed or present as gradual weight loss and a general decline in condition.
In feces, it is sometimes possible to see round, whitish worms resembling spaghetti.

Causes and risk factors
Infestation is caused by intestinal nematodes, mainly ascarids and hookworms.
Contamination occurs through ingestion of eggs present in the environment (soil, prey, contaminated water), through larval penetration of the skin (in the case of hookworms), or through transmission from mother to offspring—either before birth across the placenta, or after birth through milk.
Predation on prey already infected with parasites (rodents, wild ungulates) can also play a role in the lifecycle of these parasites.
Pups are most at risk due to mother-to-pup transmission and their immature immune system.
Pack living, with a shared territory and common resting areas, promotes cross-contamination through contact with infested feces.
A humid and warm environment favours the survival of eggs and larvae in soil.
A weakened, sick, or stressed animal is more susceptible to the effects of parasitism.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly by the oral route, through ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment, on infected prey, or on contaminated fur.
Certain hookworm larvae can also penetrate directly through the skin, particularly at the paw pads.
Vertical transmission, from a pregnant or nursing female to her offspring, is a major source of infestation in young wolves.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on a thorough clinical examination and, importantly, on faecal analysis under the microscope, called faecal examination, which allows identification of parasite eggs.
In some cases, a blood test may be performed to assess the consequences of infestation, such as anaemia from blood loss caused by certain worms.
In wild animals, post-mortem diagnosis through necropsy is sometimes the only way to precisely identify the parasites involved.
Treatment
Treatment is based on administration of antiparasitic drugs belonging to the family of dewormers (anthelmintics), chosen and tailored by a veterinarian according to the parasite identified.
Supporting treatment may be given in cases of dehydration or marked anaemia, in the form of fluids or nutritional supplements.
In wild or semi-wild animals, treatment is often difficult to implement and requires capture or drug administration via medicated bait supervised by professionals.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
In captive or park animals, a regular deworming programme tailored to the species and developed with a veterinarian helps limit parasite carry.
Regular cleaning of enclosures and prompt removal of feces reduce the number of eggs present in the environment.
In wild populations, prevention relies mainly on maintaining good overall health and an uncrowded habitat, limiting parasite concentration.
Veterinary monitoring of young animals is particularly important, as they are the most vulnerable.
Possible complications
Untreated heavy infestation can lead to severe dehydration, anaemia from chronic blood loss, significant growth delay in young animals, or intestinal blockage in extreme cases.
In pups, a heavy parasite burden can compromise survival if not managed in time.

Persistent diarrhea or diarrhea containing blood in a wolf pup or adult.
Repeated vomiting associated with weight loss.
Visible worms in feces or vomit.
Abnormally swollen belly in a young animal, combined with stunted growth.
Unusual tiredness, dull coat and prolonged loss of appetite.
Transmission to humans
Some of these worms, particularly Toxocara canis and hookworms, are zoonoses: humans can become infected accidentally by ingesting eggs present in soil or through contact with infested feces.
In humans, this can cause larval migration through various organs (larva migrans syndrome) or skin lesions from hookworm larvae.
Following basic hygiene practices (hand washing, proper management of feces) greatly reduces this risk.
Prognosis
The outlook is generally good in a healthy adult, as the infestation often remains mild and well tolerated after treatment.
In a wolf pup, the outlook depends on how quickly treatment begins: severe untreated infestation can be serious or even fatal, whereas prompt treatment usually allows complete recovery.
Frequently asked questions
Can the grey wolf transmit these worms to humans?
Yes, some of these parasites, such as roundworms or hookworms, are zoonoses. Human contamination occurs through contact with contaminated soil or feces, never through mere presence of the animal.
How can you tell if a wolf is parasitized without seeing worms?
Most cases show no visible worms to the naked eye. Only a laboratory stool analysis, coproscopy, can confirm the presence of parasites.
Are wolf cubs born already parasitized?
It's common. Larvae of certain roundworms can cross the placenta during pregnancy, or pass through breast milk after birth, contaminating infants very early.
Is this parasitism always serious?
No, in healthy adults, infestation is often discrete and well tolerated. It becomes a concern especially in the young or weakened animals.
