Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in African penguins, occurring both in the wild and in captivity at zoos and wildlife rehabilitation centers. The parasites most frequently involved belong to the family Anisakidae, particularly the genus Contracaecum, which lodge in the bird's stomach and sometimes in the esophagus. This parasitic infection can remain subtle in a healthy penguin, but may become severe or even fatal in young birds, weakened birds, or those under stress.

A parasitized penguin may appear normal if the infestation is light. As the worm burden increases, loss of appetite or refusal to eat fish is often observed, along with progressive weight loss despite apparent normal feeding. General lethargy develops, with less enthusiasm for swimming or moving around. Vomiting of partially digested fish is frequent, sometimes with visible worms in the vomit. Stools may become unusually soft or discolored. In severe cases, the bird may show signs of dehydration, pale mucous membranes indicating anemia, and dull, poorly maintained plumage. Severe cases can lead to perforation of the stomach wall, causing intense abdominal pain and a life-threatening emergency.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by gastric nematodes, primarily of the genus Contracaecum, whose life cycle involves an aquatic intermediate host. African penguins become infected by eating fish containing infective larvae. The larvae then develop in the penguin's stomach to the adult stage, where they can cause local inflammation, ulcers, or even granulomas or perforations in cases of heavy parasite burden.

Young penguins, convalescent or stressed birds, and those living in high-density conditions are at greater risk. Consumption of raw fish with inadequate quality control, access to uncontrolled natural water areas, and a weakened immune system (concurrent illness, molting, breeding season) favor parasite establishment and multiplication. In wild populations, proximity to piscivorous birds carrying adult parasites also plays a role in maintaining the parasitic cycle.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, supported by faecal analysis (looking for worm eggs in droppings) and sometimes by gastric endoscopy allowing direct visualisation of adult worms in the stomach. Blood tests may be carried out to evaluate overall impact, particularly the presence of anaemia or inflammation. In complicated cases, imaging (radiography, ultrasound) helps identify complications such as perforation or obstruction.

Treatment

Treatment is based on administration of antiparasitic drugs belonging to the anthelmintic family, prescribed and dosed exclusively by the veterinarian according to the bird's weight and condition. Supportive care may be added in cases of dehydration or anaemia, including rehydration and nutritional support. In severe cases with digestive complications, surgical management may be necessary.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention relies on regular veterinary check-ups with faecal parasitology examination (coproscopy), particularly in captive penguins. Fish distributed must come from controlled sources and be frozen according to suitable protocols to kill nematode larvae before feeding. Monitoring body condition and feeding behaviour allows early detection of appetite loss or suspicious weight loss. In facilities housing multiple birds, strict pool hygiene management and a preventive worming programme decided by the veterinarian limit parasite transmission.

Possible complications

Possible complications include ulceration and perforation of the gastric wall, secondary peritonitis, marked anaemia from chronic blood loss, and growth delay in young penguins. Untreated heavy infestation may lead to the bird's death, particularly in individuals already in poor health.

Frequently asked questions

Can the African penguin transmit these worms to humans?

The risk is considered very low under usual conditions of contact with these birds. Certain nematodes of the Anisakidae family can theoretically infest humans through consumption of contaminated raw fish, but not through direct contact with the penguin itself.

How do we know a penguin is infested without waiting for symptoms to appear?

Regular parasitological examination of faeces, performed by a veterinarian, often makes it possible to detect parasite eggs before the appearance of visible clinical signs.

Is over-the-counter dewormer sufficient to treat this disease?

No. The choice of molecule, dosage and duration of treatment must be determined by a veterinarian with knowledge of penguin-specific characteristics, as self-medication can be ineffective or even dangerous.
