Gastrointestinal parasitism in marmosets refers to infestation of the intestines by roundworms (nematodes). These small parasites live at the animal's expense, feeding on the host or irritating the digestive tract wall.
In marmosets, which are small and fragile animals, even moderate infestation can have serious consequences. Young animals and weakened individuals are particularly at risk.

Several species of nematodes (roundworms) can parasitize the marmoset's digestive tract, including ascarids, pinworms, and intestinal strongyles specific to New World primates.
Eggs from these parasites are shed in the feces of infested animals and become infective after a period in the external environment.
Contamination occurs through accidental ingestion of eggs present on food, substrate, the caregiver's hands, or cage surfaces.
Young animals, immunocompromised or stressed individuals are more susceptible. Dense group housing, inadequate cage hygiene, soiled bedding, and lack of enclosure rotation increase the risk. Stress from transport, environmental changes, or unbalanced diet can trigger symptom onset in animals that already carry parasites.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly via the fecal-oral route: the animal ingests parasite eggs present in an environment contaminated by infected feces.
Group housing, sharing of food bowls or living spaces, and inadequate enclosure cleaning promote transmission between individuals.

Quarantine of new animals before introduction to a group is an important measure. Good hand and equipment hygiene by caretakers also reduces the risk of transmission.
Possible complications
