The animal may lose its appetite, gradually lose weight and become despondent, with a coat that loses its usual shiny appearance.\n

In young red pandas, growth retardation is possible in the event of a significant infestation.\n

A swollen belly (bloating) may also be noted, particularly in young, heavily parasitized animals.

Causes and risk factors

The infestation is due to intestinal nematodes (roundworms), notably roundworms and sometimes other families of roundworms specific to carnivores or close to species that coexist with the red panda in captivity.\n

Contamination most often occurs by ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment (soil, soiled litter) or via intermediate hosts such as certain insects or small invertebrates depending on the type of parasite.

Young red pandas, whose immune systems are still immature, are more vulnerable.\n

Life in captivity, with sometimes higher density of animals and a shared environment, can encourage the accumulation of parasite eggs in the soil.\n

Stress linked to a change of environment, an unbalanced diet or concomitant immunosuppression also increase the risk of severe infestation.\n

A lack of hygiene in the enclosure or regular cleaning of defecation areas constitutes a significant risk factor.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly by the fecal-oral route: the animal ingests worm eggs present in an environment soiled by contaminated excrement.\n

Some parasites can also be transmitted via an intermediate host (e.g. an insect) that the red panda accidentally ingests while exploring its environment.\n

Transmission from mother to offspring is also possible for certain species of roundworms.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Supportive treatment (rehydration, nutritional support) may be associated in the event of a weakened general condition.\n

Post-treatment monitoring with a new stool analysis makes it possible to verify the effectiveness of the treatment.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is based above all on good hygiene of the enclosure: regular cleaning, rapid removal of excrement, periodic disinfection of surfaces.\n

Preventive deworming programs, adapted to the species and monitored by a veterinarian specializing in exotic animals, are commonly implemented in zoos.\n

Regular parasitological control of stools (coproscopy) makes it possible to detect an infestation before the appearance of visible symptoms.\n

It is also advisable to limit contact with potential intermediate hosts and carefully manage the bedding and substrate in the enclosure.

Possible complications

A massive, untreated infestation can lead to severe dehydration, anemia and significant weight loss.\n

In young individuals, this can compromise growth and permanently weaken the immune system, increasing susceptibility to other infections.\n

In the most serious cases, intestinal obstruction linked to a massive accumulation of worms is possible, although rare.

When to see a veterinarian

The animal has persistent diarrhea or repeated vomiting.\nWorms are visible in the stools.\nThe animal loses weight or loses its appetite for no apparent reason.\nThe coat becomes dull and the animal appears dejected.\nA young red panda has an abnormally swollen belly or stunted growth.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good when the infestation is detected and treated early, in particular through regular veterinary monitoring in captivity.\n

In the absence of treatment, especially in young individuals or already weakened animals, the prognosis may become more guarded due to possible complications.

Is red panda roundworm parasitism transmissible to humans?
