The condition is caused by roundworms (nematodes) that settle in the stomach or intestine of the basking shark. These parasites belong to groups known in cartilaginous fish (sharks and rays). The basking shark probably becomes infected by swallowing, along with the plankton it filters, larval forms of the parasite or small organisms that carry these larvae.
No precise data are available on the factors that favour heavy infestation in this species.
Generally in marine fish, a high presence of contaminated plankton in certain feeding zones, or weakening of the animal for another reason, could favour the establishment of parasites in large numbers.
