Intestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common digestive condition in the North African green frog, whether living in the wild or in captivity (terrarium, pond). These parasites live in the animal's intestines and feed at its expense. Light infestation often goes unnoticed, but a heavy parasitic load can seriously weaken the frog, especially in young individuals or animals already under stress.

Causes and risk factors
Infestation is caused by intestinal nematodes, roundworms belonging to several families that can parasitize amphibians (notably pinworms and roundworms of amphibians). The life cycle may be direct, with eggs or larvae released into the aquatic or terrestrial environment and ingested by the frog through water, food, or prey (insects, larvae) themselves carrying larval forms.
A high density of animals in the same pond or terrarium promotes transmission.
A damp environment, poorly cleaned, with accumulation of droppings increases the risk.
Live prey captured in the wild may introduce parasites.
Stress from captivity, an unbalanced diet, or unsuitable temperature weaken the animal's defenses and promote development of infestation.
Young frogs and tadpoles are more vulnerable than adults.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on microscopic examination of a fecal sample (fecal floatation), which reveals roundworm eggs in the sample. The veterinarian may also look for adult worms that are visible directly in the stool or during a thorough clinical examination. In some cases, a necropsy performed on a deceased animal can confirm the diagnosis after the fact to protect the remaining group.
Treatment
Treatment involves antiparasitic medications specific to amphibians, prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian experienced in exotic animals, since the safety margin in amphibians is narrow. Supportive care (rehydration, improvement of housing conditions) often accompanies treatment.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintain strict hygiene of the pond or terrarium, with regular water changes and removal of droppings.
Avoid overcrowding.
Quarantine any new animal before introducing it to an existing group.
Favor captive-bred prey over those caught in the wild, to reduce the risk of parasite introduction.
Have fecal samples examined for parasites regularly by a veterinarian, especially in group settings (breeding facility, zoo, shelter).
Possible complications
A severe untreated infestation can lead to intestinal obstruction, chronic nutrient malabsorption, severe weight loss, and in the most serious cases, death of the animal, especially in young or already weakened individuals.

Is intestinal parasitism in the green frog transmissible to humans?
No, intestinal nematodes specific to amphibians are not transmitted to humans. It is nevertheless recommended to wash your hands after handling animals or their water.
