Intestinal pinworm parasitism is an infestation of the digestive tract by small roundworms called pinworms. In green sea turtles, these parasites live primarily in the large intestine. A mild infestation often goes unnoticed, but a heavy parasitic load can weaken the animal, especially in young turtles or those already in poor health. This parasitic disease affects both wild sea turtles and those kept in captivity, in pools, or in rehabilitation centers.

Most turtles carrying pinworms show no visible signs, especially if the worm burden remains low. Causes and risk factors

The infestation is caused by nematodes of the pinworm family, small roundworms that colonize the turtle's colon. The parasite life cycle is direct: the turtle swallows eggs present in water, food, or on contaminated surfaces, the eggs hatch in the digestive tract and larvae develop into adults without requiring an intermediate host. Female worms then lay new eggs that are shed in feces, recontaminating the environment.

Young turtles and weakened or stressed animals are more susceptible to the effects of infestation. High population density in the same enclosure, inadequately cleaned water or substrate, poor tank hygiene, and an immune system already challenged by another disease increase the risk of severe infestation. Recently rescued turtles, injured animals, and those in rehabilitation centers face greater risk due to stress and crowded conditions.

Transmission

Transmission occurs through the fecal-oral route: the turtle ingests pinworm eggs present in the pool water, sand, rocks, or food contaminated by fecal matter. A shared environment among multiple turtles with poor cleaning or infrequent water changes strongly promotes reinfection and spread between individuals.
