The Morpho is a spectacular exotic butterfly, often bred in insectariums or tropical aviaries. Like many insects raised in captivity, its larval stages (caterpillars) can be affected by intestinal parasites known as "roundworms" or nematodes.

This term actually groups together several different parasites that live in the caterpillar's digestive tract and disrupt its digestion. The subject remains poorly documented in butterflies compared to conventional domestic animals, and available information comes mainly from breeders' experience and some entomological research.

The disease chiefly affects the caterpillar, the stage when the insect actively feeds; the adult (butterfly) feeds only on liquids and is therefore much less affected.

In the infested caterpillar, a slowdown in growth is most noticeable: it gains weight more slowly than its siblings and remains small for its age.

Appetite may decrease, with the caterpillar neglecting the foliage it previously ate eagerly.

Feces (droppings, called "frass") may become soft or abnormal, sometimes with small thread-like particles corresponding to the parasites themselves.

The caterpillar may appear softer, less active, and its abdomen may look swollen or distended.

In severe cases, the next molt (transition to the chrysalis) may be delayed, incomplete, or may not occur at all, with general weakening of the larva.

Causes and risk factors

The roundworms responsible belong to the large family of nematodes, parasites widespread in many invertebrates. They colonize the caterpillar's digestive tract and feed partly on its intestinal contents or the tissues lining it.

Infestation most often occurs through ingestion of parasite eggs or larvae present on foliage given as food, or in a substrate contaminated by droppings from animals already infested.

Breeding caterpillars in dense groups promotes transmission from one individual to another.

Poor hygiene in the rearing enclosure (substrate or foliage not renewed, droppings not removed regularly) greatly increases the risk.

Use of foliage collected outdoors without washing or inspection, potentially contaminated by parasites from other insects or birds, is a significant risk factor.

Stress from poor temperature, unsuitable humidity, or excessive density can weaken the caterpillar's natural defenses and facilitate parasite establishment.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis mainly relies on careful observation by the breeder: stunted growth, abnormal droppings, and presence of visible parasites.

A veterinarian specializing in exotic animals or an entomologist can, in certain cases, perform a microscopic examination of the droppings to look for parasite eggs.

Treatment

Management primarily involves improving rearing conditions: enhanced hygiene, isolation of affected individuals, and regular replacement of foliage.

Antiparasitic treatments exist for certain farmed insects, but their use in butterflies remains delicate because the margin between an effective dose and a toxic dose for the insect is narrow. Any treatment must be supervised by an experienced person or a professional, never used without guidance.

In many cases, in the absence of a validated specific treatment, management relies mainly on hygiene measures and nutritional support (fresh, quality foliage) to help the caterpillar better tolerate the infestation.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Renew foliage very regularly and remove droppings from the rearing enclosure daily.

Thoroughly wash leaves collected outdoors before offering them, or use plants cultivated away from contamination sources.

Avoid overcrowding caterpillars in the same rearing space.

Regularly disinfect rearing equipment (boxes, cages, supports) between breeding cycles.

Quickly isolate any caterpillar showing stunted growth or abnormal appearance, to limit spread to other individuals.

Possible complications

Significant growth delay can prevent the caterpillar from reaching the weight necessary for successful pupation.

Severe infestation can lead to larval death before chrysalis formation.

Even when the chrysalis forms, a weakened butterfly may emerge with poorly developed wings or reduced vitality.

When to see a veterinarian

A caterpillar is visibly growing much slower than others in the same batch.

Abnormal or soft droppings appear in the rearing enclosure.

Suspicious filiform elements are visible in the frass.

Several caterpillars from the same rearing show similar signs at the same time.

A caterpillar remains abnormally soft, inactive, or is not progressing towards pupation.

Prognosis

Prognosis depends mainly on the timing of intervention and the severity of the infestation.

A light infestation detected early and combined with rapid improvement in hygiene often allows the caterpillar to complete its cycle normally.

Severe or neglected infestation greatly compromises the chances of successful pupation and can result in the loss of several individuals in the rearing.

Frequently asked questions

Can intestinal parasitism in Morpho be transmitted to other insects in the breeding facility?

Yes, transmission occurs easily from one caterpillar to another through foliage or substrate soiled by contaminated droppings, especially in group rearing.

Can a caterpillar infested with parasites be treated with a standard antiparasitic?
