The fiddler crab (Uca spp.), a small crustacean living in mudflats and brackish shorelines, can harbour external parasites called copepods and branchiurans. These are tiny crustaceans that attach to the shell, gills or legs of the animal. This condition mainly affects crabs kept in captivity, in aquariums or terrariums, where water renewal is poor. It remains generally mild but can weaken a crab already compromised by poor environmental conditions.

An infested crab often moves less and hides more. The shell may appear dull or irregular, sometimes with small mobile spots or granules visible to the naked eye or under magnification.
