Parasitism by parasitic copepods and crustaceans is a common condition in mackerel (Scomber scombrus), a marine pelagic fish living in schools. These small crustaceans cling to the skin, gills, fins or in the mouth of the fish to feed on mucus, blood or tissue. Some species of marine copepods, such as those of the genus Lernaeocera or other closely related parasitic crustaceans, are commonly reported in pelagic and demersal fishes of temperate and Mediterranean waters. This disease affects both wild mackerel and those raised in captivity or observed in public aquariums.

The visible signs depend on the site of attachment of the parasite and its number.\n\nSmall threadlike or sac-shaped organisms can be seen clinging to the skin, fins, gills or in the mouth of the fish. They are sometimes visible to the naked eye, resembling small worms or whitish to greenish filaments.\n\nInfested fish may rub against the walls of the pool or against the bottom, trying to scratch against objects. Swimming may become irregular or jerky.\n\nRedness, small sores or irritated areas sometimes appear at the parasite's attachment point. In the event of a significant infestation of the gills, the fish may show signs of difficulty breathing and a loss of appetite with progressive weight loss.\n\nIn light infestations, no sign is visible and the discovery remains accidental, during an inspection or after capture.

Causes and risk factors
These diseases are caused by parasitic crustaceans belonging to the copepod group, as well as by other crustaceans such as certain isopods or gill rakers depending on the region. These organisms have a life cycle that includes several larval stages free in the water before finding a host fish to which they attach, sometimes permanently using hooks or specialized anchoring structures.
The risk is higher in coastal waters rich in zooplankton where copepod larvae are abundant. A high density of fish, whether in a natural school or in a breeding or aquarium tank, promotes transmission from one fish to another. Water temperature and season also influence the parasite cycle, with certain times of the year being more conducive to their proliferation. Stress, poor water quality or a general weakening of the fish can worsen the impact of the infestation.
Transmission
Transmission takes place by aquatic route: the free larvae of copepods or parasitic crustaceans swim in the water and attach directly to a host fish that they encounter, without direct contact necessary between infested and healthy fish.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian or fish specialist carefully examines the body surface, fins, mouth and gills for visible parasites. A sample of skin mucus or an examination of the gills under a microscope helps identify the type of crustacean in question. Direct observation of parasites, often recognizable by their characteristic shape, generally guides the diagnosis without requiring complex examinations.
Treatment
Treatment is based on the use of antiparasitics suitable for fish, in the form of a bath or added to water, after advice from a specialist. Manual removal of visible pests may be considered in some cases by an experienced professional. Improving water quality and reducing stress always accompany treatment.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintaining good water quality and reasonable management of fish density in captivity reduces the risk of infestation. Forty new arrivals before their introduction into a common pool helps limit the introduction of parasites. Regularly inspecting fish and observing their behavior helps detect a problem early. In the natural environment, no prevention is possible, the infestation being part of the normal ecology of the fish.
Possible complications
A large and untreated infestation can lead to secondary skin lesions favoring opportunistic bacterial or fungal infections. Damage to the gills can compromise breathing and permanently weaken the fish. Progressive weight loss and a general decline in vitality are possible in cases of significant chronic parasitism.

Are these parasites dangerous for humans if we eat mackerel?
Copepods and crustaceans that are external parasites of mackerel are not transmissible to humans. Properly cooking the fish eliminates any residual parasitic risk in any case.
How to recognize a parasitized mackerel when purchasing?
The surface of the fish should be observed for small filaments or abnormal growths on the skin, fins or near the mouth. A fish showing these signs remains edible after cooking but can be discarded for aesthetic reasons.
