Piroplasmosis is a blood disease caused by tiny parasites called piroplasms (closely related to Babesia). These parasites invade the elephant's red blood cells and gradually destroy them.

In African savanna elephants, this disease remains rare and poorly documented compared to other large African herbivores. It is transmitted by ticks that bite the animal as it moves through vegetation.

The disease affects both wild elephants and those living in captivity or reserves, wherever the tick vectors are present.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by protozoan piroplasms that parasitize the interior of red blood cells. Once established, they multiply and eventually rupture these cells, causing anemia (a shortage of red blood cells).

Elephants living in areas with heavy tick infestation are at greatest risk, especially during warm, humid seasons that favour these parasites.

Young animals, individuals weakened by stress, injury, or other disease, and animals newly introduced into an infested environment appear more vulnerable.

Proximity to other wild or domestic large herbivores carrying ticks can increase the risk of exposure.

Transmission

The parasite is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks that live in savanna vegetation and brushy areas. The tick becomes infected when it feeds on an infected animal, then transmits the parasite to a new host during its next blood meal. There is no direct transmission between elephants.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
