Affected seals show difficult, rapid, or noisy breathing, sometimes accompanied by coughing. Nasal discharge is often observed, along with marked fatigue and loss of appetite. The animal may remain withdrawn and away from the group, with elevated body temperature. In advanced cases, the mucous membranes (around the mouth and eyes) may appear pale or bluish from lack of oxygen, and rapid weight loss develops.

Causes and risk factors

Several agents may be responsible. Opportunistic bacteria (such as certain species of Bordetella, Streptococcus, or Klebsiella) often exploit a weakened animal to infect the lungs. Finally, lung worms (nematodes) are a very common cause in wild seals, particularly in young animals, causing chronic airway inflammation that encourages secondary bacterial infections.

Young seals recently weaned or orphaned are particularly vulnerable, as are stressed, malnourished, or injured animals found stranded. High density in rescue centers or pools, a weakened immune system, poor water or environmental conditions, and exposure to other sick animals all increase the risk.

Transmission

Transmission varies depending on the agent involved: viruses and certain bacteria can spread between seals through the respiratory route (proximity, sneezing) or contaminated water, while lung worms are typically acquired by ingestion of infected prey.

Possible complications

Without treatment, pneumonia can progress to severe respiratory failure, lung abscess, or septicemia (bloodstream infection). In debilitated animals, the outcome may be fatal, particularly in young stranded seals already in poor general condition.
