Pneumonia in elk is a lung infection affecting these animals, most often kept in captivity or semi-free conditions (cervid breeding farms). It is usually caused by bacteria that take advantage of a weakening of the animal or a prior viral infection to invade the deep respiratory tract.

This disease is particularly feared in young elk and during transport, group mixing, or significant stress, as these situations weaken natural defences. It can progress rapidly and lead to death if not managed promptly.

Causes and risk factors

Several bacteria can be involved, notably germs from the Pasteurella, Mannheimia or Mycoplasma groups, often in combination with a respiratory virus that has previously weakened the respiratory tract (for example a virus similar to those responsible for respiratory disease in cattle).

This virus-bacteria association is typical in so-called 'shipping fever' or stress-related pneumonia in cervids and livestock: the virus opens the door, the bacterium establishes itself and triggers the actual lung infection.

Transport and movement are major triggers, as is mixing animals from different origins.

Stress from captivity, overcrowding in enclosures, abrupt changes in temperature or humidity, and poor ventilation of buildings increase the risk.

Young animals, animals weakened by another illness or nutritional deficiency, and those with an immature immune system are most vulnerable.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian evaluates the animal from a distance when possible, as approach and restraint may worsen respiratory stress in a wild or semi-wild animal.

Lung auscultation, temperature measurement, and observation of herd behavior guide diagnosis. Samples (blood, nasal swabs) may be sent to the laboratory to identify the causative organism or organisms.

In severe cases or in herds, necropsy of a deceased animal often helps confirm the diagnosis in order to protect the rest of the herd.

Treatment

Treatment relies on antibiotics chosen for the suspected organisms and prescribed and administered under veterinary supervision. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be used to relieve respiratory distress and fever.

General supportive care (stress reduction, calm environment, easy access to water and feed) is an integral part of management.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention mainly relies on reducing stress: limit unnecessary transport, avoid abrupt mixing of animal groups, ensure good ventilation of shelters without direct cold draughts.

Balanced nutrition and access to clean water strengthen natural defences. Regular herd monitoring allows early signs to be detected before the disease worsens.

Rapid isolation of any animal showing respiratory signs limits spread to the rest of the group.

Possible complications

Possible complications include pulmonary abscesses, pleuritis (infection of the lung lining), sepsis (systemic infection), and death.

Animals that survive may retain chronic respiratory problems and remain more susceptible to other infections.

When to see a veterinarian

Persistent cough or nasal discharge in one or more elk.

Rapid, labored, or noisy breathing.

Animal that is lethargic, isolated from the group, or eating less.

Animal lying down and refusing to stand.

Appearance of multiple similar cases in the same herd or following recent transport.

Prognosis

Prognosis depends on how quickly treatment is started. Detected early and treated, elk pneumonia can resolve without major lasting effects.

If treatment is delayed, in young animals, or when significant stress is involved, prognosis becomes more guarded and mortality can be substantial, especially in herds or captive settings.
