Fin rot is a common bacterial disease in sole raised in aquaculture or tank systems. It affects the edges of the fins, which gradually fray and become necrotic. This condition is closely linked to water quality and stress in the fish. It may affect a single fish or spread throughout the tank if rearing conditions remain poor.

Early signs are subtle: the fin edges become whitish or opaque, sometimes slightly reddened. Over time, the fin tissue frays, shortens, and may partially disappear.

Affected areas may show small ulcerations or a greyish discoloration. The sick fish may swim abnormally, remain lethargic at the bottom of the tank, or rub against the walls and substrate as though scratching an itch.

In advanced cases, appetite diminishes and the fish becomes sluggish. If infection progresses toward the fin base or body, the outlook worsens significantly.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by opportunistic bacteria, particularly species of Vibrio, Aeromonas, or Flexibacter, naturally present in the water. These bacteria exploit skin damage or stress in the fish to proliferate on the fins and trigger infection.

Poor water quality—elevated ammonia and nitrite levels, insufficient oxygen—is the primary risk factor.

High stocking density, injuries from handling or transport, stress from transport or sorting, and sudden changes in temperature or salinity also favour disease onset.

Poorly maintained or inadequately cleaned rearing systems further increase the risk of bacterial contamination.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian or aquaculture specialist examines the affected fins and assesses the water quality of the tank. A sample from the lesion may be taken to identify the bacteria responsible and guide treatment selection. Examining all fish in the group also helps determine the extent of the problem.

Treatment

Treatment combines correcting husbandry conditions (water quality, stocking density, stress reduction) and appropriate antibacterial therapy, administered in the water or systemically as needed, under guidance from a veterinarian or aquaculture specialist. Quarantining new fish before introducing them to a community tank helps prevent the introduction of pathogenic bacteria.

Possible complications

Without treatment, the infection can progress to the base of the fin and then spread to muscle tissue or bone, resulting in permanent deformities. Generalized infection (septicemia) may occur in weakened animals, with a risk of death, particularly if secondary infection by fungi or other opportunistic bacteria develops.
