The fins become ragged, with whitish, grayish, or reddened edges that appear "eaten away." A red or white line sometimes appears at the border between healthy and affected fin tissue. The fish may swim less actively, rub against décor or rocks, and show reduced interest in food. In advanced cases, the fin bases become involved and sores develop on the body, worsening the outlook.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by opportunistic bacteria that naturally occur in the water. They take advantage of a weakened fish or an existing injury to establish infection on the fins. These bacteria are generally harmless to healthy fish living in adequately maintained water.
Poor water quality—elevated levels of ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate—is the primary risk factor. Stress plays an important role: aggressive tank mates including other surgeonfish or territorial species, insufficient hiding places, recent transport, or sudden tank changes. Pre-existing injuries from bites or contact with sharp décor elements favor infection. A weakened immune system, such as after another illness or from improper diet, also increases susceptibility.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinarian specializing in aquatic animals or aquarium care evaluates the appearance of the fins, the fish's overall condition, and asks about water parameters and tank history. Water quality testing (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH) is a core part of the evaluation, as it often points to the underlying cause of the problem.
Treatment
Treatment begins with correcting water parameters and reducing stress in the aquarium. A marine fish antibiotic may be prescribed by a veterinarian in confirmed or advanced cases. Temporary isolation of the affected fish in a hospital tank may be recommended to support treatment and prevent spread.
