Fin rot is a common infectious disease in aquarium and pond fish, including parrotfish. It is marked by progressive breakdown of fin tissue, which becomes ragged and then dies. This condition is often linked to poor water quality that allows opportunistic bacteria to multiply. It may affect a single fish or several individuals in the same pond or aquarium if unfavorable conditions persist.

The edges of the fins become ragged, whitish or reddish, then gradually disintegrate.
The fin may appear eaten away, with an irregular outline and sometimes translucent areas.
In advanced cases, the base of the fin may be inflamed or show reddish inflammation called congestion.
The fish may swim less actively, stay near the bottom, or rub against décor surfaces.
Loss of appetite and lethargy may appear if the infection spreads to the body.
Without treatment, tissue death can reach the base of the fin and prevent regrowth.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is most often caused by opportunistic bacteria, particularly from the genera Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, or Vibrio, which take hold when a fin is already weakened or water quality is poor. Fungi may sometimes add to the bacterial infection in advanced stages, complicating the clinical picture.
Poor water quality with high levels of organic waste or ammonia is the main risk factor. Stress from transport, overcrowding, sudden temperature or salinity changes weakens the fish's immune system. Pre-existing injuries from fights between fish or contact with rough décor open the door to infection. Inadequate filtration or irregular maintenance of the pond or aquarium also increases risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinarian specializing in exotic or aquatic animals will examine the appearance of the fins and the fish's overall condition. Water quality assessment, particularly ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, as well as temperature, is part of the evaluation. In some cases, a sample may be taken to identify the causative bacteria and guide treatment.
Treatment
Treatment focuses on immediate improvement of water quality and, if necessary, the use of an antibacterial or antiseptic agent suitable for fish, prescribed by a veterinarian. In cases with a fungal component, an antifungal medication may be added. Treatment must always be accompanied by correction of water parameters to prevent relapse.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintaining good water quality with stable parameters and regular filtration system maintenance is the best prevention. Avoiding overcrowding and limiting sources of stress, such as frequent transport or sudden temperature changes, is recommended. Regular observation of the fish allows early detection of any fin lesions. Quarantining new arrivals before introduction to a shared pond reduces the risk of introducing pathogenic bacteria.
Possible complications
If the infection is not treated, it can progress to the base of the fin and prevent any regrowth of tissue. It may also spread to the fish's body and develop into a generalized infection, potentially fatal.
