Fin rot is an infection that attacks the edges of a seahorse's fins. It is caused by opportunistic bacteria, sometimes worsened by fungi, that occur naturally in the water. These microorganisms take advantage of poor water quality or a weakened fish to attack the delicate fin tissues. In seahorses, which are already stress-sensitive animals, this disease can progress rapidly if left untreated.

The seahorse's fins appear ragged with irregular edges that are whitish or slightly reddened. The tissue looks eroded, gradually shrinking back toward the base. In advanced cases, the tail or dorsal fin can nearly disappear entirely. The animal swims with more difficulty, loses its usual balance, and may struggle to grip supports with its prehensile tail. It often becomes less active, eats poorly, and stays hidden. Local inflammation, sometimes accompanied by slight cloudiness or a fuzzy appearance if fungi are also present in the infection, can also be seen.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is usually caused by opportunistic bacteria such as Vibrio, Pseudomonas, or Aeromonas, which occur naturally in marine aquariums. These bacteria become pathogenic when the fish's natural defenses are weakened. Secondary fungal infection can complicate the condition, especially if the wound remains open for a long time.

Poor water quality with high levels of ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates is the main trigger. Stress from unsuitable tank mates, transport, sudden changes in water parameters, or improper food for seahorses (which have very specific dietary needs) weakens the animal. Mechanical injuries from décor, lack of adequate surfaces to grip, or water overly rich in organic matter also promote the disease. Recently introduced or poorly acclimated seahorses are particularly vulnerable.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Treatment

Management begins with correcting water parameters, which is often sufficient in early stages. Antibacterial or antifungal treatment suitable for marine aquariums may be prescribed by the veterinarian based on severity and the organism identified. Isolating the sick seahorse in a treatment tank reduces stress and allows better monitoring of the treatment response.

Prevention

Maintaining excellent water quality is the best prevention: effective filtration, regular water changes, monitoring of parameters (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, salinity, temperature). Avoid overstocking and choose non-aggressive tank mates. Providing plenty of natural surfaces for the seahorse to grip reduces stress and injuries. A suitable, rich, and varied diet helps maintain a strong immune system. Quarantining all new arrivals limits the introduction of pathogens.

Possible complications

Without treatment, the infection can spread toward the fin base, reach deeper tissues, and lead to generalized septicemia. Significant tissue loss may make swimming impossible and threaten the animal's survival. Secondary fungal infection or systemic bacterial contamination substantially worsens the prognosis.

Prognosis

Prognosis is favorable if the condition is detected early and water quality is quickly restored. It becomes guarded if fins are extensively affected or systemic complications develop, as seahorses are a fragile species with limited physiological reserves.

Is fin rot contagious to other fish in the tank?

The bacteria involved are often already present in the water of any aquarium. The risk of spread depends mainly on the quality of the shared water, rather than direct contagion. However, it is advisable to isolate the affected animal.

Do fins grow back after healing?

Yes, in many fish species fin tissues can partially regenerate once the infection is under control, but this requires time and very good water quality.

Can it be treated without consulting a veterinarian?

It is strongly advised against using over-the-counter treatments without professional advice, as the seahorse is highly sensitive to certain medications and to chemical variations in water.

How can I tell if my aquarium water is the problem?
