Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by a tiny single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. This parasite can infect nearly all warm-blooded animals, including birds such as the African marabou.

In this bird, infection is often silent, but it can sometimes become serious, especially if the bird is weakened, young, or stressed (captivity, transport, injury). The parasite can then affect several organs, particularly the brain, lungs, and heart.

This disease is also transmissible to humans (zoonosis), which requires hygiene precautions when handling birds or their droppings.

In the marabou, clinical signs are often subtle or absent in a healthy bird. When the disease manifests, marked depression, loss of appetite, progressive weight loss, and unusual fatigue may be seen.

In more severe forms, particularly when the parasite affects the nervous system, tremors, seizures, or partial paralysis may develop. Respiratory involvement can result in difficulty breathing. Digestive disturbances such as diarrhea are sometimes noted.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that requires cats (definitive hosts) to complete its reproductive cycle. The marabou, like many birds, is an "intermediate" host: it can become infected but does not directly transmit the parasite to other marabous through simple contact.

Infection most often occurs through accidental ingestion of water, food, or soil contaminated by cat droppings containing infectious forms of the parasite (called oocysts). The marabou, a scavenging and opportunistic bird, can also become infected by consuming carcasses or tissues of other animals already carrying the parasite in the form of cysts.

Young birds, debilitated birds, stressed birds, or those with compromised immune systems (concurrent disease, captivity, transport) are more likely to develop clinical disease. The presence of stray cats near the marabout's living or feeding areas increases the risk of environmental contamination. The scavenging behaviour of the species, which brings it into contact with potentially infected carcasses, is also a contributing factor.

Transmission

Transmission occurs primarily through the oral route, by ingesting food, water, or soil contaminated by droppings from infected cats, or by consuming prey or carrion carrying parasitic cysts. There is no direct transmission between birds through simple contact.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Definitive diagnosis is difficult to obtain in a living bird. The vet relies on clinical examination, the bird's history (origin, contact with cats, diet) and blood tests to detect antibodies against the parasite. In some cases, molecular biology techniques (detection of the parasite's genetic material) may be performed on samples. Definitive diagnosis is often obtained following detailed post-mortem examination.

Treatment

When treatment is undertaken, it relies on specific antiparasitic drugs sometimes combined with supportive care (rehydration, nutritional support, anti-inflammatories) to help the bird through the acute phase. The choice and duration of treatment are determined solely by the veterinarian, who will adapt management to the bird's condition.

Prevention

Prevention relies mainly on limiting contact between the marabout's environment and cats, particularly by preventing stray cats from accessing feeding or water areas. Good sanitary management of the environment, with regular cleaning of water points and feeding areas, helps reduce risk.

There is no vaccine available against this disease in birds. Regular veterinary monitoring of captive birds (zoos, wildlife rehabilitation centres) allows earlier detection if suspicious signs appear.

Possible complications

Severe forms may result in lasting neurological damage, severe respiratory problems, or heart disease. In an already weakened bird, toxoplasmosis can worsen a precarious general condition and, in the most severe cases, lead to death.

The bird appears withdrawn, prostrate, or has refused food for several days.

Trembling, convulsions, or loss of balance appear.

Visible breathing difficulty or abnormal breathing.

Rapid, unexplained weight loss.

Any marked change in behaviour in a captive bird or in a rehabilitation centre.

Transmission to humans

Toxoplasma gondii can infect humans, mainly through ingestion of contaminated food or water, or through contact with feces from infected cats. The risk of direct transmission from a marabout stork is very low, but hygiene precautions (hand washing, gloves when handling droppings or carcasses) are recommended, particularly for pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals.

Prognosis

The prognosis is variable. Many infected birds never develop clinical signs, in which case the prognosis is excellent. However, when the disease becomes symptomatic, particularly with neurological involvement, the prognosis is more guarded and depends on how quickly treatment is started and the bird's overall condition.
