The whitefly itself shows no disease symptoms related to this viral transmission. It remains active, flies, feeds, and reproduces normally even when carrying a plant virus. It is the plants that are punctured that display signs: yellowing, leaf distortion, discoloration, stunted growth, or colored mosaics on the foliage. A very large whitefly colony on a crop can also weaken the plant through sap depletion alone, regardless of any viral transmission.

Causes and risk factors
The virus is acquired by the whitefly when it pierces an infected plant to feed. In all cases, the insect carries the virus without being affected by it, then inoculates it into the next plant it pierces.
Greenhouse cultivation or warm climates promote rapid multiplication of whiteflies. The presence of weeds or infected reservoir plants near crops increases the risk of spread. The exchange of contaminated seedlings or cuttings between plots or regions also facilitates dispersal. High whitefly population density, in the absence of early control, considerably increases the risk of large-scale viral transmission.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through piercing: the whitefly pierces an infected plant, acquires the virus, then transmits it by piercing a healthy plant. There is no transmission between whiteflies themselves or to animals or humans.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
There is no 'veterinary diagnosis' for whiteflies in this context, as the insect is not diseased. An agronomist, phytosanitary technician, or agricultural advisor identifies the insect and assesses its population level on the crop. Identification of the transmitted virus is done on the diseased plant, by observing symptoms and, if necessary, through specialized laboratory analysis in plant pathology.
Treatment
There is no antiviral treatment for the insect or the infected plant. Management relies on reducing whitefly populations through integrated pest management methods: physical means (screening, traps), biological control (predatory or parasitoid natural enemies), and as a last resort, appropriate insecticides used according to recommendations from an agricultural professional. Plants already infected with the virus should generally be removed to limit spread.

Prevention
Whitefly management relies on regular crop monitoring using yellow sticky traps and removal of diseased plants or weeds that serve as reservoirs. Insect-proof screening at greenhouse entrances limits introduction of the insect. Crop rotation and spacing of susceptible plots also reduce viral pressure. Certain natural predators, such as small parasitoid wasps, can help regulate whitefly populations. The use of certified, virus-free seedlings at planting is an essential preventive measure.
