An aphid carrying a plant virus shows no visible symptoms: its behaviour, growth and reproduction are typically unaffected. Symptoms appear on the infested plant: colour mottling on the leaves, yellowing, leaf curling or distortion, stunted growth, and misshapen or discoloured fruit. These signs on the plant are indirect and may not appear until several days or weeks after the infectious feeding.

Causes and risk factors
The aphid becomes contaminated when it feeds on a plant already infected with a virus by piercing it to consume its sap. Some viruses briefly adhere to the insect's mouthparts (so-called "non-persistent" transmission, rapid but short-lived), while others penetrate deeper into its body and can remain infectious much longer, sometimes for the insect's entire lifetime (so-called "persistent" or "circulative" transmission). When the aphid later moves to a healthy plant and pierces it again to feed, it deposits viral particles through its saliva, thereby contaminating the new plant. The aphid itself does not develop disease linked to this virus: it generally experiences no symptoms from it.
Risk factors that favour this transmission include high aphid density in the crop or greenhouse, proximity to already infected plants (including weeds or ornamental plants serving as viral reservoirs), spread of winged aphids during their dispersal flights, mild weather conditions that promote rapid aphid reproduction, and the absence of pest control measures against these insects.
Transmission
Transmission occurs exclusively through feeding by piercing: the aphid inserts its mouthparts (stylet) into plant tissue to draw sap, and it is during this act that it either acquires the virus from an infected plant or transmits it to a healthy one. There is no transmission of the virus between aphids themselves, nor transmission to humans or animals: these viruses are strictly specific to plants.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
There is no 'veterinary diagnosis' for this situation, as the aphid is not diseased: it acts as a vector. Diagnosis is made on the affected plant by an agronomist, phytosanitary adviser or specialist laboratory, using viral detection tests (serological such as ELISA, or molecular such as PCR) performed on leaf or sap samples. Visual observation of symptoms on the crop (mosaics, yellowing, deformations) points to a suspected viral infection, later confirmed in the laboratory.
Treatment
There is no antiviral treatment for the aphid or for the infected plant, as plant viruses cannot be 'cured' once the plant is contaminated. Management relies on controlling the vector (insecticides or biocontrol methods targeting aphids) and agronomic measures: removal and destruction of affected plants, clearance of viral reservoirs, installation of physical barriers (netting, fleece), and choice of seeds or certified virus-free plants.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention aims primarily to protect crops rather than the aphid itself. It relies on limiting aphid populations through integrated pest management methods (natural enemies such as ladybirds, insect-proof netting, reflective mulching), use of plant varieties resistant or tolerant to the viruses in question, removal of already infected plants to eliminate viral sources, and regular crop monitoring. Weed management around fields is important as they can harbour both aphids and viruses.
Possible complications
For the aphid, this transmission does not cause known health complications. Consequences occur only at the level of contaminated plants, which may show general weakening, reduced yield, deformation of fruits or leaves, or even plant death in severe cases. At the field or greenhouse scale, an aphid colony can rapidly spread a virus to a large number of plants.

Some infections remain limited, while others can completely compromise a crop.

You must observe the leaves and fruits: mosaic discoloration, yellowing, deformation or stunting of the plant are warning signs. Only laboratory testing can confirm the presence of the virus.
Is treating aphids enough to stop the spread of the virus?
Not always completely. Even after eliminating present aphids, a plant already infected remains a virus carrier. Control must combine limiting aphid populations, removal of diseased plants, and resistant varieties.
Do insecticides prevent all viral transmission?
Not necessarily for viruses with very rapid (non-persistent) transmission: the aphid can transmit the virus during a exploratory probe lasting just a few seconds, even before being affected by the insecticide.
