Vibriosis is a bacterial disease affecting spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) and other marine crustaceans. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, naturally present in seawater. This infection becomes problematic mainly when animals are weakened, injured, or kept in poor conditions, such as in farming or captivity for sale. It can cause septicemia, a generalized blood infection that is often fatal if not treated quickly.

They become pathogenic when the animal is stressed, injured, or immunocompromised, or when water quality declines (high temperature, poor oxygenation, high stocking density).
Several factors promote the development of vibriosis: poor water quality (pollution, low oxygen levels, high temperature), high animal density in the same tank or holding system, injuries from handling or transport, stress from capture or prolonged storage, and inadequate nutrition. Spiny lobsters kept in captivity for sale (holding tanks, storage before marketing) are particularly at risk.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through contaminated seawater, as the bacterium is naturally present in the marine environment. It can also spread between individuals in the same tank or holding vessel, particularly through shared water, especially when weakened or injured animals release the bacterium in large quantities.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on observation of clinical signs combined with laboratory analysis. A veterinarian specializing in aquatic pathology or a qualified laboratory can perform bacterial culture from the hemolymph or affected tissues to identify the causative bacterium. Treatment, when feasible, relies on immediate improvement of farming conditions (water quality, reduced density, stress management) combined, in some cases, with appropriate antibiotics under professional supervision. Quarantine of new arrivals before mixing them with existing stock is also recommended in farming or commercial storage facilities.
