Causes and risk factors

The virus is acquired by thrips larvae when they feed on an already infected plant. Once inside the insect, the virus may multiply in certain tissues and then be transmitted during subsequent feeding on new plants, including at the adult stage. The thrips remains a virus carrier for life once infected at the larval stage; however, an adult acquiring the virus for the first time generally cannot transmit it.

The presence of already infected host plants nearby, high thrips population density, greenhouse crops or warm dry climates that favor thrips proliferation, and the absence of crop rotation or weed management (weeds acting as virus reservoirs) all increase the risk of viral spread.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

There is no individual veterinary diagnosis of thrips as one would perform for a pet. Identification involves specialized laboratory testing (agricultural or entomological): microscopic observation of the insect, molecular testing to detect the virus in the thrips' tissues or plant tissue.

Treatment

No antiviral treatment exists for thrips themselves. Management is achieved through insecticide families that target the vector, under the guidance of an agricultural professional, alongside preventive measures. No treatment can eliminate the virus once the insect is carrying it.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention relies mainly on vector management: use of insect-proof netting in greenhouses, sticky traps in appealing colors to monitor thrips populations, elimination of weeds and plant debris that harbor the virus, and selection of resistant plant varieties where possible. Biological control using thrips predators is also being explored in agriculture.

Possible complications

The main complication does not concern the health of the thrips themselves but the spread of the virus on a large scale throughout a crop, which can lead to significant losses in yield for growers.
