A dietary supplement cannot correct a poorly constructed diet. When an animal is fed a complete, balanced food suited to its age and size, additional supplementation is usually unnecessary—and sometimes counterproductive.

When a supplement makes sense

Certain situations call for targeted supplementation: recovery from illness, periods of growth or pregnancy, an aging animal with stiffening joints, dull coat after difficult shedding, or a homemade diet whose nutritional balance cannot be guaranteed without support. In these cases, the supplement addresses an identified need, not general anxiety.

When it's better to abstain

Stacking supplements exposes animals to real risks of excess. Some vitamins accumulate in the body and become toxic beyond a certain threshold; an imbalance between minerals can be more harmful than mild deficiency. Doubling an nutrient already present in complete food provides no benefit.

Read dosage instructions like a prescription

Doses are calculated per kilogram of body weight and per duration. Giving a product longer or more generously than recommended doesn't work better. Courses usually have a defined duration to respect, then reassess rather than continue out of habit.

Species matters

A product formulated for dogs may not suit cats, whose metabolism differs significantly, let alone rodents or birds. The needs of livestock are reasoned by group and physiological stage, usually with technical support.

Before introducing a supplement—particularly in an animal on medication, pregnant, very young, or suffering from a known condition—ask your veterinarian. Only they can determine whether supplementation is justified, at what dose, and for how long.
