In a dairy goat herd, crusts and hair loss hid not one but two combined skin diseases.

What happened?

On a farm in northwestern Italy, 152 dairy goats of Alpine and Saanen breeds lived together without separation. For about two months the farmer had noticed skin problems, mainly hair loss and crusts, but only in the Alpine goats. The Saanen goats showed no signs at all. Appetite and milk production were not affected.

What did the vet find?

The vet examined all the animals and found 45 sick Alpine goats, with patchy hair loss on the chest and rump, crusts and thickened skin on the legs, armpits and genital area. Skin samples showed a small mite causing mange, together with a fungus causing ringworm, present at the same time in most affected goats. No Saanen goat had either the mite or the fungus.

What did the vet do?

ℹ️ Treatment given to THIS animal, decided by its veterinarian. It is not a prescription: never apply it without veterinary advice.
All the goats received a parasite treatment applied to the skin (pour-on) against the mange mite. At the same time, the farmer disinfected the barn with an antifungal product to destroy the ringworm fungus spores in the environment.

What happened next?

The vet followed up the goats weekly with new skin samples. After two months all the samples came back negative and every goat had fully recovered.

Advice for the farmer

Keep a close eye on darker-coated animals, as they attract mites and parasites more, and separate groups if skin signs appear to prevent diseases combining and getting worse.
