A goat stayed in constant heat after estrus synchronization: a new hormone treatment solved it within days.

What happened?

At a dairy goat farm in Turkey, 45 goats received a standard hormone protocol to synchronize their heat cycles before the breeding season. In most goats, heat signs stopped normally after three days. But one goat kept showing intense heat behaviour for 96 hours, with less milk and less appetite. She was separated from the herd for a thorough check-up.

What did the vet find?

The vet found a swollen, reddened vulva. Ultrasound showed a thin-walled fluid-filled pocket in the left ovary, almost 18 mm wide: a cyst. A blood test confirmed the diagnosis: estrogen (the heat hormone) was high, while progesterone (the hormone that should appear after ovulation) was very low, showing that ovulation had never happened.

What did the vet do?

ℹ️ Treatment given to THIS animal, decided by its veterinarian. It is not a prescription: never apply it without veterinary advice.
The vet decided to try a new substance, a hormone called TAK-683, never before used for this problem in goats. The goat received just one injection under the skin. She was then closely monitored with repeated ultrasounds and blood tests over several days to track how the cyst changed.

What happened next?

By day three, the excessive heat signs had vanished and progesterone levels began rising. The cyst gradually turned into a normal progesterone-producing structure, peaking at day 13. Then, around day 17, this structure naturally disappeared and the ovary resumed normal activity: the goat had fully recovered.

Advice for the farmer

If a goat stays in heat abnormally long after synchronization, especially out of breeding season or during lactation, isolate her and have her ovaries checked quickly by a vet.
