Precautions to take during the Tunisian summer.
The Tunisian summer exposes dogs and cats to heatstroke, a real veterinary emergency. Unlike us, they sweat very little: they regulate their temperature by panting, which is quickly overwhelmed when the air is hot.
Good everyday reflexes
Constantly renewed fresh water, shade at all hours, early morning or evening outings, and never any exertion during the hot hours.
Be careful with the bitumen: if it is too hot for your hand for five seconds, it is too hot for the pads. Old, overweight or flat-faced animals (bulldogs, Persians) are the most vulnerable.
Never leave an animal in a car, even for a few minutes, even with windows ajar.
Recognizing heat stroke
Extreme panting, depression, very red gums, vomiting: refresh immediately with warm water and consult a veterinarian urgently.
Do not use ice water or cold baths: sudden cooling constricts the skin's vessels and slows the evacuation of heat. Tempered water on the stomach, legs and neck, a fan, and the road to the clinic.
