In a dream, the Prophet Abraham receives the command to sacrifice his son Ismail. In the face of their complete submission to God, a ram sent from heaven forever changes the course of this trial.
Abraham, upon whom be peace, saw in a dream that he was to sacrifice his son Ismail. Far from dismissing this vision as mere illusion, he understood it as a divine command that he must carry out with trust. He spoke of it to his son, still young, and asked for his opinion on what God had shown him.
The Submission of Father and Son
Ismail, showing exemplary patience and faith, replied to his father that he must carry out what had been commanded of him, and that his father would find him among the patient. This dialogue is reported in the Quran, in Surah As-Saffat.
﴿ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ فَانظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِي مِنَ الصَّابِرِينَ ﴾
"And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, 'O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you. So see what you think.' He said, 'O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the patient.'"
(Surah As-Saffat, verse 102)
The two then fully submitted to what they believed to be God's will. Abraham laid down his son, ready to carry out the sacrifice that was asked of him, in an act of total surrender to God that went beyond all human logic.
The Redemption Through the Ram
It was at that precise moment, when the trial had reached its climax, that God intervened. He revealed to Abraham that it was not the death of his son that was sought, but the sincerity of his submission. A ram was then sent to take Ismail's place in the sacrifice.
﴿ وَفَدَيْنَاهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍ ﴾
"And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice."
(Surah As-Saffat, verse 107)
This ram, described by some exegetes as an animal of remarkable beauty, was thus sacrificed in place of young Ismail. This event remained in the memory of the believers as the foundation of the sacrifice carried out each year during Eid al-Adha, in remembrance of this trial overcome by faith.
It is reported that on that day, divine mercy manifested itself brilliantly: the most difficult trial that a father and son could endure was transformed into a deliverance, carried by the presence of a simple animal from the flock. The ram, a humble creature often overlooked in our societies, thus became the symbol of one of the most important moments in the history of the prophets.
A Lesson in Compassion
This story teaches us that animals occupy a far greater place in our destiny than we sometimes imagine. The ram sent to Abraham was not a mere object of sacrifice: it was chosen by God Himself, at a moment of capital importance, to embody mercy and deliverance.
Even today, when Muslims throughout the world carry out the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha, they are invited to remember the dignity that must accompany this act: respect for the animal, attention to its welfare, and gratitude toward this creature that, across the centuries, continues to remind us of God's generosity toward those who submit to His will with sincerity.
