One day, the Prophet Ibrahim asked to see with his own eyes how Allah brings the dead back to life. The answer came in the form of four birds, scattered and then called back to life.
One day, the Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ, desiring to strengthen his heart's certainty even further, made a humble request of Allah: he wished to witness with his own eyes the mystery of resurrection. This story is told in the Qur'an, in Surah Al-Baqara.
Ibrahim's Request
Ibrahim did not doubt the power of his Lord, but he desired that his heart find peace through the concrete vision of this miracle. Allah answered him by asking him to take four birds.
﴿ وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّ أَرِنِي كَيْفَ تُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ ۖ قَالَ أَوَلَمْ تُؤْمِن ۖ قَالَ بَلَىٰ وَلَٰكِن لِّيَطْمَئِنَّ قَلْبِي ۖ قَالَ فَخُذْ أَرْبَعَةً مِّنَ الطَّيْرِ فَصُرْهُنَّ إِلَيْكَ ثُمَّ اجْعَلْ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ جَبَلٍ مِّنْهُنَّ جُزْءًا ثُمَّ ادْعُهُنَّ يَأْتِينَكَ سَعْيًا ۚ وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ﴾
And when Ibrahim said: "My Lord, show me how You bring the dead back to life." Allah said: "Do you not yet believe?" "Yes," said Ibrahim, "but let my heart be at peace." Allah said: "Take therefore four birds, tame them, then place a part of each on every hill, and then call to them; they will come to you in haste. And know that Allah is Mighty and Wise."
(Surah Al-Baqara, verse 260)
The Unfolding of the Miracle
Following the divine instruction, Ibrahim took four birds. According to the scholars of Qur'anic interpretation, these included a rooster, a peacock, a raven and a dove, though the precise details of the species vary among the commentators. He tamed them, as the verse required, thus creating a bond of closeness and trust with these creatures before proceeding with the trial.
Then, at Allah's command, he distributed parts of these birds over different surrounding hills. The image is striking: fragments scattered, separated from one another, seeming forever beyond any possibility of life. It is precisely in this scattering that the strength of the divine sign that was to follow lies.
Ibrahim called out to the birds. And the miracle was accomplished: each fragment came together, life returned, and the birds, whole and alive, hastened toward him with eagerness, as the verse describes. This moment was for Ibrahim a tangible confirmation of what he already knew through faith: Allah possesses absolute power over life and death, capable of gathering that which seemed irretrievably separated.
A Lesson for All the Faithful
This account does not relate a doubt on Ibrahim's part toward his Lord, but rather illustrates the legitimate desire of the human heart to strengthen its certainty through visible signs. It also teaches that faith and the pursuit of understanding are not opposed: one can believe firmly while aspiring to see the truths one carries within made manifest concretely.
The birds, in this story, are not mere backdrop elements. They are the instruments chosen by Allah to manifest His power, and their taming by Ibrahim recalls the natural closeness that can exist between the human being and winged creatures, a bond of gentleness and mutual respect.
This story invites us, even today, to regard birds and the entire animal world with careful and benevolent attention. These creatures, chosen by Allah to illustrate one of the greatest mysteries of existence, deserve our respect, our protection and our gentleness in daily life, in remembrance of this sacred bond between the living and their Creator.
