A cat can fixate on a single recipe because it learns very early, during a sensitive period between 2 and 7 weeks of age, to associate a specific shape, texture, and smell with "safe food": once this imprint is formed, any new food triggers natural food neophobia, a caution reflex in the face of the unknown.
Imprinting, neophobia, and unintentional reinforcement
In this solitary, hunting species, wariness toward a new food is a documented adaptive trait: in the wild, it prevents the cat from ingesting a potentially toxic prey or substance. In the domestic setting, this same reflex applies to kibble or wet food. A cat that has known only one texture or one flavor during its early learning phase may regard it as the only valid option and refuse everything else, sometimes to the point of fasting for several days.
This behavior is often reinforced by the owner themselves: when the cat refuses food, the owner offers another bowl, then gives in by repeatedly returning to the preferred product. The cat then learns that waiting and refusing pays off, which strengthens its pickiness over the weeks. This learning mechanism based on consequences is well documented in feline behavioral literature.

The risk of dependence on a single product
Real danger arises when the single recipe is reformulated, discontinued, or temporarily unavailable in stores: a cat fixated on one food may refuse any alternative for several days straight. In this species, prolonged anorexia is never trivial, because fasting for more than 48 to 72 hours carries the risk of hepatic lipidosis, a serious complication requiring prompt veterinary care.
To limit this risk, it is recommended that while the cat is young, a reasonable rotation of textures, formats, and flavors be offered within an equivalent quality range, without forcing changes or making abrupt switches. This moderate variety during the learning period helps maintain lasting dietary flexibility in adulthood.
