Why does a cat ask for food even after eating?

A cat that asks for food shortly after its meal rarely expresses true hunger: three quite different causes lie behind this behavior, and only one of them involves a genuinely empty stomach.

A digestive system built for ten small meals

In the wild, a cat hunts and eats many small prey distributed throughout the day—the equivalent of ten to twenty feeding sessions in 24 hours. Two meals spaced twelve hours apart therefore do not match its natural feeding rhythm: a request following a meal may simply reflect a stomach already ready to receive a new small portion a few hours later.

But meowing at the food bowl is also, very often, social meowing. A cat quickly learns that a cry near its bowl triggers a reliable response from its owner: presence, voice, a stroke, or simply attention. Food then becomes a pretext for interaction rather than a response to an energy need—the cat is seeking contact, not extra calories.

In the senior cat, a signal not to overlook

After 8–10 years of age, a noticeably increased appetite, with persistent requests and large meals, should raise concern if weight drops at the same time. Feline hyperthyroidism, usually caused by a benign thyroid tumor, is the most common cause of this picture: it speeds up metabolism to the point that the cat loses weight despite increased food intake. Diabetes mellitus can present a similar picture, along with increased thirst and urination.

These two diseases respond better to treatment the earlier they are detected, through a simple blood test. A senior cat eating well while losing weight should be seen by a veterinarian rather than simply given more food.
