The cat's vertical pupil allows it to vary the opening of its surface to extreme proportions, roughly 135 times between its most closed and most dilated states, compared to only about 15 times in humans. This range is essential for a small predator that hunts in both bright daylight and dusk.

A precision optical mechanism

In cats, the pupil narrows into a thin slit thanks to two powerful iris muscles that work like a tightly stopped-down camera aperture. This slit concentrates residual light onto a band of retina rich in rods, while limiting spherical aberration: light rays pass through a more uniform zone of the lens, which sharpens the image—a crucial advantage for judging a prey's distance before the final pounce.

Comparative studies of terrestrial predators have shown a link between vertically slit pupils and an ambush posture close to the ground: the cat's eyes, positioned low, benefit from better depth perception thanks to this shape, which increases the difference between what each eye sees and enhances the short-range stereovision needed for a quick, accurate attack.

Why herbivores are the opposite

Prey species such as goats, sheep, and horses have a horizontal pupil instead. This orientation widens the panoramic field of vision to nearly 360 degrees, while keeping a band of sharpness aligned with the horizon: it serves to spot a predator coming from any direction rather than to judge precise distance. The shape of the pupil thus reflects an opposite survival strategy—ambush versus constant vigilance—more than the animal's size alone.
