A female donkey can carry her foal for over 13 months

In donkeys, pregnancy lasts about 371 days on average, compared with roughly 342 days in mares. The gap is not a strict rule, though: duration varies widely from one jenny to another, yet stays fairly consistent for the same jenny from one pregnancy to the next.

Veterinary references report that a donkey's gestation can range from 11 to 14.5 months, and that a pregnancy longer than 400 days is not unusual. In mares, the range is narrower, around 11 to 12 months.

Another recent study suggests that a male foal may lengthen gestation by about five days, but this finding is debated. The biological reasons behind this longer pregnancy have not been established.
