Anisakiosis is a parasitic infection caused by nematode larvae belonging to the family Anisakidae, particularly the genus Anisakis. These larvae occur naturally in the tissues of many marine fish, including marlin, a large predator found in warm and temperate seas. In marlin itself, the presence of these larvae usually goes unnoticed and does not cause serious disease. The main concern with this parasitosis is human consumption of improperly prepared fish, as the larvae can cause a disease in humans called human anisakiosis.

In marlin, infestation with Anisakis larvae is typically subtle and produces no visible signs of disease. The larvae most often form cysts in the abdominal cavity, on the viscera, or within the muscle tissue, appearing as small whitish nodules or coiled structures barely visible to the naked eye. In rare cases of very heavy infestation, weight loss or abdominal discomfort may be observed, but these signs are non-specific and may have other causes. Most of the time, infestation is discovered only during evisceration or preparation of the fish.

Causes and risk factors
The condition is caused by larvae of roundworms (nematodes) of the genus Anisakis, mainly Anisakis simplex and related species. The life cycle of this parasite involves several intermediate hosts. Eggs are released into seawater by marine mammals (dolphins, whales, seals) that harbour adult worms in their digestive tract. The larvae hatch and are ingested by small crustaceans, which are themselves eaten by fish or cephalopods. Marlin, as a large predator feeding on fish and squid, accumulates larvae through its diet. It acts as an intermediate or paratenic host—a host in which the parasite survives without developing to the adult stage.
Older and larger marlins that have had time to accumulate more parasitized prey during their lifetime typically carry a heavier parasite load. The presence of marine mammals in the same fishing grounds favours the persistence of the parasitic cycle. Ocean areas rich in small fish and cephalopods that serve as intermediate hosts are also more conducive to transmission.
Transmission
Marlin become infected by feeding on small fish and cephalopods carrying larvae. There is no direct transmission between marlin. Humans are infected only by consuming raw or improperly prepared fish flesh.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Routine veterinary diagnosis of anisakiosis in live marlin is not feasible, as this fish is a wild species caught on the high seas. Detection occurs mainly after capture, during evisceration and visual inspection of the flesh and organs by fishing or fish handling professionals, who look for the characteristic coiled larvae. When there is doubt about a batch of fish, transillumination techniques or laboratory analysis can confirm the presence of larvae.
Treatment
There is no antiparasitic treatment applicable to marlin in its natural environment. The only possible intervention concerns the fish after capture: removal of visibly parasitized parts, freezing or appropriate cooking before human consumption.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
There is no practical way to prevent infestation of marlin in the wild, as this parasite is part of the normal marine ecosystem. Prevention focuses mainly on food safety for humans: careful visual inspection of the fish during evisceration, freezing at sufficiently low temperatures for an appropriate duration, or thorough cooking of the flesh can destroy the larvae and eliminate any risk to the consumer.
Possible complications
In marlin, direct complications from the parasite are rare and generally minor. The main risk does not concern the animal but humans: consumption of raw or insufficiently prepared flesh can lead to human anisakiosis, with acute abdominal pain, vomiting, and sometimes allergic reactions that can be severe in susceptible individuals.

It does not spread from person to person or through simple contact with fish. Proper freezing or thorough cooking of fish kills the larvae and eliminates the transmission risk.
Prognosis
The outlook for the marlin itself is excellent, as this infestation generally does not affect its health or survival. The main concern lies in the human food chain, where proper screening and preparation of the fish can eliminate any risk.
