What is it?
Copper is a trace element: the body only needs it in very small quantities, but it cannot do without it. It is involved in hair color, bone strength, the production of red blood cells, the functioning of nerves and immune defenses.
The deficiency can be direct, when the soil and fodder contain little, or indirect, and this is the most common case: copper is present in the ration but other elements – molybdenum, sulfur, excess iron – block it and prevent the animal from absorbing it.
The signs appear slowly, over weeks to months, and often affect an entire flock rather than a single animal. It is this collective and progressive character which should raise alarm.

Discoloration of the hair, often the most visible sign: black animals take on a reddish or grayish tint, red coats fade. The discoloration is frequently more noticeable around the eyes, forming a sort of glasses.
Dull, dry, bristly coat, general appearance of the lot is not very flourishing.
Slowed growth in young animals, animals which lag behind their peers.
Weight loss or weight stagnation despite a correct diet.
Persistent diarrhea that does not respond to usual treatments.
Pale mucous membranes due to anemia, fatigue with exercise.
Lameness and swollen joints in young people, fragile bones, abnormally easy fractures.
Decrease in milk production and reproduction difficulties: discreet heat, repeated returns to heat, fertility at half mast.
In calves, a nervous form can be seen with incoordination and staggering gait.
Increased susceptibility to infections, animals who recover poorly from everything.
When to consult without delay
This list does not replace veterinary advice. It gathers situations that justify a prompt consultation.
Causes and risk factors
Soils and forages naturally poor in copper in certain regions.
Excess molybdenum and sulfur in the ration: combined, they form compounds in the rumen which sequester copper and make it unusable. This is the most common mechanism.
Excess iron, brought by ferruginous water, by soil ingested with fodder or by contaminated silage.
Excess of zinc, which also competes with copper.
Rations based on corn silage and cereals, naturally poorly provided, without suitable mineral supplementation.
Periods of high demand not covered: rapid growth, end of gestation, peak lactation.
In calves, low liver reserves at birth when the mother herself was deficient.
Growing young and cows at the end of gestation or at the beginning of lactation.
Raised on soils poor in copper or rich in molybdenum.
Pastures amended or fertilized in a manner that increases molybdenum availability.
Drinking water rich in iron.
Fodder soiled with soil, silage harvested low or in humid conditions.
Absence of mineral supplementation, or mineral chosen without taking into account analyzes of the ration.
Calves born to deficient mothers, who start with insufficient reserves.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian begins by observing the flock: copper deficiency is rarely the case of just one animal.
It evaluates the body condition, the color and quality of the hair, the growth of the young, the condition of the joints and the pallor of the mucous membranes.
The diagnosis is not made by eye: it is based on analyses, blood samples from several animals in the batch and, if necessary, dosage in the liver, which reflects the actual reserves much better.
Analysis of the ration, fodder and water is essential to understand whether there is a lack of intake or a blockage by molybdenum, sulfur or iron. The behavior to follow is not the same.
Other causes of poor condition and stunted growth are ruled out at the same time: parasitism, undernutrition, chronic diseases, other deficiencies.
Treatment
The correction is based on an appropriate copper intake, the form and duration of which are decided by the veterinarian after analyses: mineral supplementation of the ration, intake by injection or slow release devices depending on the situation.
Treatment is always accompanied by correction of the cause: reduce iron intake through water, limit soiling of fodder, review the mineral formulation, adapt grazing.
Never supplement with copper on your own initiative and do not accumulate several sources — mineral, licking block, enriched complete food, injection. Copper accumulates in the liver and poisoning can occur suddenly, with jaundice, dark urine and death of the animal.
The answers are not immediate: the hair color takes weeks to return, growth starts again more quickly.
The most affected animals, especially young ones with bone or nerve lesions, sometimes have after-effects.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Have the fodder, ration and drinking water analyzed regularly: this is the basis, because we only correct what we have measured.
Use a mineral supplement adapted to your context, chosen based on these analyses, and not a generic mineral purchased at random.
Ensure permanent access to the mineral for all animals in the flock, with enough distribution points for the dominated to have access too.
Prioritize periods of high demand: growth of young, end of gestation, start of lactation.
Limit soil ingestion: do not graze too closely, avoid trampled and muddy areas, harvest fodder with sufficient cutting height.
Check the quality of water, especially its iron content, when it comes from a borehole or well.
Monitor the color of the hair and the growth of the young: a batch that is rusting and growing poorly should trigger analyzes before the delay sets in.
Fear excess as much as lack: never combine several sources of copper without veterinary advice.
Possible complications
Permanent growth retardation in the most affected young people.
Bone fragility with fractures and limb deformities.
Persistent anemia and increased susceptibility to infections, with animals responding poorly to treatment.
Long-term infertility, lengthening of intervals between calvings.
Nervous damage in young calves, with gait disorders that are sometimes irreversible.
Copper poisoning in the event of excessive or cumulative supplementation: jaundice, dark urine, sudden death.
When to see a veterinarian
The hair of several animals from the same group turns red or pale, especially around the eyes.
Your young are growing poorly despite a correct ration and good management of parasitism.
Diarrhea sets in in a lot without response to usual treatments.
The mucous membranes are pale, the animals tire quickly.
Lameness, swollen joints or fractures are increasing among young people.
The fertility of the herd deteriorates without explanation.
You are considering supplementing with copper: first ask for advice and analyses, excess is dangerous.
Prognosis
Corrected in time, the deficiency is filled: growth resumes, fertility improves, the hair gradually regains its original color.
The visible signs take weeks to disappear, which does not mean that the treatment is ineffective.
Bone and nerve lesions in young calves can leave permanent after-effects.
As long as the cause of the blockage — molybdenum, sulfur, iron — is not corrected, the deficiency returns despite supplementation.
Frequently asked questions
Is red hair around the eyes enough to indicate a copper deficiency?
It is a suggestive sign, especially if it affects several animals from the same batch, but it is not enough. Other deficiencies and other diseases degrade the coat. Only analyzes can confirm and above all understand why copper is missing.
Can I give a copper-enriched salt block for safety?
No, not without opinions. Copper accumulates in the liver and becomes toxic. Accumulating a block, a mineral and an enriched food can lead to fatal poisoning. Supplementation is based on analyses, with the veterinarian.
Why are my animals deficient when the ration contains copper?
Because the presence of copper does not guarantee its absorption. Molybdenum and sulfur block it in the rumen, iron and zinc compete with it. This is the most common form of deficiency and can only be corrected by acting on these elements.
How long before you see improvement?
Growth and appetite return first, within a few weeks. The color of the hair takes longer, often while the hair renews itself. Fertility improves in the next cycle.
