Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a microscopic aquatic fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, which belongs to a group called chytrids.
This fungus produces mobile spores that swim in water using a small flagellum. These spores settle on a toad's skin, penetrate it, then develop within the superficial cells of the epidermis.
By disrupting skin structure, the fungus prevents the normal exchange of water, oxygen, and minerals (such as sodium and potassium) that normally occur across the skin. This imbalance can cause cardiac arrest in the infected animal.
Certain conditions favour development of the disease. Cool to moderate temperatures appear to promote fungal growth, while warmer temperatures can slow its development.
Amphibian populations at higher altitudes, in humid and cool wetlands, are often most affected. Stress from other diseases, water pollution, or habitat degradation can also make toads more vulnerable.
Not all amphibian species respond the same way: some appear more resistant and may carry the fungus without developing serious disease, making them silent reservoirs for transmission to other, more susceptible species.

The fungus spreads mainly through water: spores swim freely in ponds, streams, and water bodies where toads live.
Direct contact between infected and healthy animals also promotes spread, as does contact with contaminated mud, aquatic plants, or equipment (boots, nets, terrarium supplies).

Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Treatment
Treatment, when provided by a veterinarian specialising in exotic animals, most often involves antifungal medicated baths.
Temporary adjustment of the animal's environmental temperature may also be part of management, as the fungus is sensitive to heat.
In captive breeding facilities or collections, a treatment protocol tailored to each species and situation should be established by a veterinarian, as some antifungals may be poorly tolerated by certain amphibians.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies mainly on hygiene and limiting the movement of animals or equipment between different water sources.
It is recommended to thoroughly disinfect boots, nets, and equipment used during field work before reusing them elsewhere. Avoiding the translocation of wild amphibians from one water body to another also limits fungal spread.
For people keeping amphibians in captivity, strict quarantine of new arrivals before any contact with other animals is essential, as well as veterinary screening before introduction into an established group.
To date, there is no vaccine available against this disease.
