Infected toads often show marked lethargy and loss of appetite.
Redness or small hemorrhages under the skin are frequently observed, particularly visible on the belly and limbs. Swelling (edema) may develop, giving the animal a bloated appearance.
Skin wounds, crusts, or areas of peeling skin are also possible. In severe cases, the animal may experience tremors, abnormal movements, or remain unable to right itself before death.
In tadpoles, the infection can cause necrosis (tissue death) of internal organs, visible only on autopsy, sometimes resulting in mass mortality within a few days.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by viruses of the genus Ranavirus, family Iridoviridae. Several viral species in this genus can infect amphibians, including toads, but also sometimes fish and reptiles.
Young toads and tadpoles are particularly vulnerable. High density of animals in the same body of water, stress, elevated water temperature, and the presence of other amphibian species already infected increase the risk of transmission. Moving or releasing wild amphibians, as well as introducing new animals to a pond or vivarium without quarantine, also favour the emergence of outbreaks.
Transmission
The virus spreads through direct contact between infected animals, through contaminated water in ponds and water sources, and through contact with contaminated surfaces, equipment, or mud. Carcasses of animals that have died from the disease remain an important source of contamination for other amphibians in the same water body.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the history (sudden mortality in a population or vivarium), clinical examination of skin lesions and general signs. Definitive diagnosis requires specialised laboratory tests, such as detection of viral genetic material by PCR or tissue examination following necropsy. These tests are often performed as part of a health survey, particularly in cases of mass mortality.
Treatment
There is no validated antiviral treatment against ranavirus in amphibians. Management remains primarily supportive: environmental management (water quality, temperature), comfort care, and sometimes treatment of secondary infections with antibiotics or antifungals if the veterinarian deems it necessary. In the case of a confirmed outbreak in a captive collection, strict isolation of affected animals and complete disinfection of the environment are essential to limit transmission.

Possible complications
Infection can progress to severe multi-organ involvement with internal haemorrhages, leading to death within days. Secondary bacterial or fungal infections may occur and worsen the prognosis. At the population level, the disease can lead to local collapse of toad and other amphibian populations sharing the same habitat.
