Coccidiosis in pikas is a parasitic disease of the intestines caused by tiny single-celled parasites called coccidia, of the genus Eimeria. These parasites multiply within the cells that line the pika's intestinal wall, causing inflammation and damage to the digestive tract. The pika is a small mammal related to the rabbit, often kept or observed in captivity in an educational or conservation setting. Young animals, whose immune systems are still immature, are most at risk and develop the most severe forms of disease. In healthy adults, infection may remain subtle, but a weakened or stressed pika can develop overt illness.

The most common signs are diarrhea, sometimes tinged with blood, loss of appetite, and general lethargy. The animal gradually loses weight and its coat becomes dull and poorly groomed. The abdomen may appear swollen or tender to the touch. Dehydration develops rapidly in young animals because of repeated digestive losses. In severe cases, stunted growth is observed in young pikas that survive.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by multiplication of coccidia of the genus Eimeria within the cells of the intestinal wall. These parasites produce resistant forms called oocysts, which are shed in feces and can survive for prolonged periods in the environment. Infection occurs through the mouth when the animal ingests food, water, or bedding contaminated with these oocysts. High concentrations of oocysts in a confined space promote massive infection and more severe signs.
Young age is the main risk factor, as young pikas have not yet developed protective immunity. A damp, dirty, or overcrowded environment greatly increases the survival and spread of oocysts. Stress from transport, change of environment, or inappropriate diet weakens the animal's natural defenses. Living together with other animals that carry the parasite without showing signs also promotes transmission.

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on observed clinical signs, particularly diarrhea in a weakened young animal.
