Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when a platypus's body temperature exceeds what its body can handle. This semi-aquatic animal is adapted to a cool life, in water or in shaded burrows. It regulates extreme heat very poorly, because it does not sweat and its thick coat retains heat. When he can no longer cool down, his internal temperature rises quickly and can damage his vital organs in a short time.
This situation is mainly described among platypus kept in captivity (zoological parks, care centers) during episodes of heatwave, unsuitable transport, or insufficient access to fresh water. In the wild, the species normally avoids this risk by remaining in waterways or burrows.

At first, the animal seems abnormally tired, less active, and tries to get away from heat or light. He may pant or breathe faster than usual.
As it worsens, we observe excessive salivation, tremors, unsteady gait, then collapse. The animal may remain lying down without being able to get up.
In the most serious cases, convulsions, loss of consciousness, abnormally pale mucous membranes (mouth), and a risk of cardio-respiratory arrest appear. At this point, every minute counts.

Causes and risk factors
Heat stroke results from exposure to too high an ambient temperature combined with an inability of the platypus to release its body heat. Unlike many mammals, it does not have efficient sweat glands or very efficient panting. Its dense, insulating and waterproof coat, designed to keep it warm in cold water, becomes a major handicap in high ambient heat.
Typical risk situations are: an enclosure or pool exposed to the sun without sufficient shade, bathing water that has become too hot, transport in a poorly ventilated container, or deprivation of access to water during a hot period.
Young individuals, weakened, sick or stressed animals are more vulnerable. A platypus kept out of water for a prolonged period of time in hot weather, a poorly designed enclosure without shade or fresh water, transport or handling in the heat, and lack of supervision during temperature peaks are the main risk factors in captivity.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian assesses body temperature, state of consciousness, respiratory and heart rate, as well as the state of dehydration. Additional examinations (blood tests) can be carried out to assess the impact on the organs (kidneys, liver, muscles) and detect possible coagulation disorders.
Treatment
The treatment is an emergency which aims for progressive and controlled cooling of the animal, rehydration, support of cardiovascular function and close monitoring of vital organs. Supportive treatments may be necessary depending on the complications observed. No self-medication is possible: the handling of an animal suffering from heat stroke must be immediately entrusted to a veterinary team experienced with exotic species.

Prevention
Prevention is primarily based on environmental management. Access to fresh water and shaded areas must be ensured at all times, bathing water temperature must be monitored, transport or handling must be avoided during the hottest hours of the day, and transport containers must be adequately ventilated.
During heatwaves, close monitoring of the animal's behavior makes it possible to spot the very first signs of thermal discomfort before they get worse.
Possible complications
Heatstroke if not treated quickly can lead to serious and sometimes irreversible damage to the kidneys, liver, brain, as well as blood clotting disorders. The outcome can be fatal, especially if treatment is delayed.
When to see a veterinarian
The platypus appears unusually despondent or refuses to move after exposure to heat.
He breathes quickly, panting or abnormally.
He has tremors, a staggering gait or loses his balance.
He drools excessively or has pale mucous membranes.
He convulses or lies down without being able to get up.
Any suspicion of heat stroke, even mild, should be considered a veterinary emergency.
Prognosis
The prognosis directly depends on the speed of treatment. Identified and treated early, the animal can recover completely. On the other hand, if the body temperature remains elevated long before the procedure, the prognosis becomes guarded to poor due to the risk of multi-organ failure.
