These fungi occur naturally in the environment, including soil, fresh water, decaying vegetation, and stream banks where the platypus lives.\n\nThese fungi typically take advantage of a wound, pre-existing skin lesion, or weakened immune system of the animal to penetrate and grow in the skin.
