It therefore does not tolerate high temperatures and humidity very well. As soon as the ambient heat exceeds its natural regulatory capacity, its body temperature rises rapidly and puts its life in danger in just a few hours.

Chinchillas experiencing heat stroke breathe quickly and loudly, sometimes with their mouth open, which is abnormal in this species. He becomes limp, despondent, tries to lie down on the ground to cool off or, on the contrary, fidgets without finding a comfortable position. Excessive salivation, very hot and red ears, tremors may be observed. In severe forms, the animal staggers, convulses, loses consciousness or remains lying down without being able to get up. The gums can become very pale or, on the contrary, very red. Without rapid intervention, death can occur within hours.

Causes and risk factors
Heat stroke is caused by exposure to too high an ambient temperature, often associated with poor ventilation or high humidity. The cage placed in direct sunlight, near a window, in a car or in a poorly ventilated room in summer is the most common situation. The chinchilla has virtually no effective sweat glands and its thick fur limits heat escape, making it much more vulnerable than other small domestic mammals.
The main risk factors are an ambient temperature exceeding the comfort threshold of the species, a lack of draft or ventilation, high humidity, the absence of a shaded area or cool corner in the cage, transport in a confined and hot space, overweight, young age, old age and the presence of a pre-existing respiratory or cardiac disease which limits the animal's ability to compensate.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The diagnosis is primarily clinical and based on the context of exposure to heat associated with the signs observed. The veterinarian assesses body temperature, state of consciousness, respiratory and heart rate, as well as the state of dehydration. Additional examinations such as a blood test may be offered to assess the impact on the internal organs and guide further treatment.
Treatment
Veterinary care aims to gradually lower body temperature in a controlled manner, correct dehydration with appropriate fluid therapy, and support vital functions. Depending on the severity, supportive treatment for the affected organs, treatment against seizures or anti-inflammatory treatment may be implemented. Any attempt at sudden cooling at home should be avoided; only a professional can adapt the cooling speed to avoid other complications.

Never leave a chinchilla in a car or closed room unsupervised in summer. Permanent access to fresh water and a calm environment complete these measures.
Possible complications
Heatstroke can cause serious and sometimes irreversible damage to the kidneys, liver, heart and brain. Blood clotting disorders, pulmonary edema or neurological sequelae may appear even after apparent improvement. Death remains a possible outcome, particularly in the event of late treatment.
