The mosquito primarily responsible for this transmission is Aedes albopictus (tiger mosquito), which is present in Tunisia. Culex pipiens, which is also very common, is not considered an effective vector for dengue.

This fact sheet therefore describes the mosquito's role in the dengue cycle, not a "mosquito disease" in the strict sense.

Causes and risk factors

The female mosquito becomes infected by biting a person (or primate in certain sylvatic cycles) who has dengue virus in their blood during the period when the virus is actively circulating in them.

The virus then multiplies inside the mosquito's body, particularly in its digestive tract and then in its salivary glands. This process, called the extrinsic incubation period, usually lasts several days and depends heavily on ambient temperature.

Once this stage is complete, the mosquito remains infected with the virus for the rest of its life and can transmit it with each new bite.

The presence of larval habitats (stagnant water in pots, tires, gutters, various containers) promotes reproduction of vector mosquitoes.

Warm and humid weather speeds up virus development inside the mosquito and shortens its life cycle, increasing transmission risk.

High human population density in urban areas, combined with high mosquito numbers, increases contact between mosquitoes and infected persons.

Circulation of dengue virus among humans in a given region is essential: without infected human cases, local mosquitoes cannot become virus carriers.

Transmission

The female mosquito (mainly Aedes albopictus) transmits the virus by biting a healthy person after becoming infected from a sick person. The virus is not transmitted through direct contact between people or through objects.

So-called "vertical" transmission from the female mosquito to her eggs has been documented but remains a secondary mechanism compared to transmission through biting.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

There is no individual diagnostic testing of mosquitoes in routine practice. Detection of the virus in captured mosquitoes is carried out in specialized laboratories using molecular biology techniques as part of entomological surveillance programs.

In humans, dengue diagnosis relies on specific blood tests performed by a doctor, never on simple observation of the mosquito responsible.

Treatment

There is no antiviral treatment for mosquitoes. The only possible action is vector control: reduction of breeding sites and use of insecticides targeting larvae or adults, decided and managed by public health authorities.

In infected humans, management is exclusively a doctor's responsibility.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Vector control relies primarily on eliminating breeding sites: regularly emptying containers of stagnant water, covering water tanks, and maintaining gutters.

Mosquito nets, insect repellents, and protective clothing reduce bites, particularly during the day since Aedes albopictus mosquitoes bite mainly in daytime.

Health authorities can establish entomological surveillance and, if necessary, implement targeted insecticide treatments around detected human cases.

There is no vaccine designed for the mosquito itself; vaccination applies only to humans in certain countries and under strict conditions.

Possible complications

For the mosquito itself, infection causes no known complications.

The real risk concerns public health: the more infected mosquitoes in an area, the greater the risk of a dengue epidemic in humans, with the possibility of severe forms (hemorrhagic dengue) requiring hospitalization.

When to see a veterinarian

A person experiencing sudden high fever after being bitten by mosquitoes in a risk area should see a doctor.

Severe joint and muscle pain accompanied by fever should raise concern.

The appearance of bleeding (nose, gums) or a rash with fever warrants prompt medical consultation.

Any suspected large-scale proliferation of tiger mosquitoes in a neighborhood should be reported to local health authorities.

Prognosis

Prognosis does not apply to the mosquito, which is unaffected by the virus. It concerns the infected person: most cases of dengue in humans resolve without lasting effects, but severe forms can be life-threatening without rapid medical care.
