The mosquito itself is not sick: it acts as a simple "vehicle" (vector) that carries the virus from an infected host to another. This information sheet describes the role of the mosquito in the transmission cycle of Zika virus, a disease that primarily affects humans.
Commonly observed signs
These signs are neither exhaustive nor specific. Only a veterinarian can establish a diagnosis.
The mosquito infected with Zika virus shows no visible symptoms or behavioral changes. The infection does not affect its health, lifespan, or biting activity. This is what makes surveillance of this vector difficult: only laboratory analysis can determine whether a mosquito is carrying the virus.

Causes and risk factors
Zika virus is a flavivirus, closely related to dengue and chikungunya viruses. The mosquito becomes infected when it bites a person or animal (particularly certain primates) already carrying the virus in its blood. After a period during which the virus multiplies in its body, the mosquito becomes capable of transmitting the virus during a subsequent bite.
The presence of breeding sites with stagnant water around homes promotes the proliferation of disease-carrying mosquitoes. Warm, humid weather favors the development and activity of Aedes mosquitoes. High human population density and travel movements from areas where the virus circulates actively increase the risk of introduction and local transmission.
Transmission
The female mosquito becomes infected when it bites a host (human or primate) carrying the virus in its blood. After an extrinsic incubation period of several days in the mosquito's body, it can transmit the virus to a new host during a subsequent bite. The virus can also be transmitted, more rarely, from the female mosquito to its offspring (vertical transmission). In humans, sexual and mother-to-fetus transmission of the virus can also occur, independently of the mosquito.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
There is no veterinary diagnosis of Zika virus in the mosquito itself: mosquitoes show no signs of illness—they are only carriers and transmitters of the virus. Detection of the virus in a mosquito population is performed by entomological surveillance and public health laboratories using molecular biology techniques (RT-PCR) on collected mosquito samples. This is not an act of individual veterinary medicine.
Treatment
There is no treatment intended for mosquitoes. The only possible intervention at the vector level consists of vector control measures: use of insecticides (adulticides and larvicides) and biological or mechanical control methods to reduce populations of disease-carrying mosquitoes.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based mainly on controlling disease-carrying mosquitoes: eliminating stagnant water (pots, tires, gutters) that serve as breeding sites, using larvicides in water sources that cannot be removed, and spraying adulticide insecticides if confirmed viral circulation is detected. Individual protection against mosquito bites (repellents, long clothing, mosquito nets) remains the most effective measure to break the transmission chain.
Vaccination
There is no vaccine for mosquitoes. A human vaccine against Zika virus is in development but is not yet widely available.
When to see a veterinarian
This sheet concerns the mosquito as a vector; it is not a disease to "consult about" for the animal itself.
If a person with mosquito bites followed by fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis has recently traveled to an at-risk area, medical consultation should be sought without delay.
Notify local health authorities of any unusual mosquito proliferation or any suspected Zika case in an area where tiger mosquitoes are present.
For a pregnant woman exposed to mosquito bites in an at-risk area, prompt medical consultation is recommended due to risks to the fetus.
Transmission to humans
Zika virus is not a "zoonosis" transmitted by a typical domestic animal, but an arbovirus spread by a vector (the mosquito) between humans, and occasionally between non-human primates and humans. The mosquito itself is not an animal reservoir in the classical sense, but a biological vector essential to the transmission of the virus.
Prognosis
Not applicable for the mosquito, which does not fall ill. For public health, the prognosis depends on the presence of the vector, the climate, and the vector control measures that are in place.

Does the mosquito get sick from the Zika virus?
No. The mosquito carries the virus but develops no symptoms. It serves only as an intermediary to transmit the virus from one host to another during bites.
Can all mosquitoes transmit the Zika virus?

Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes breed. Use screens on windows and doors. Consider air conditioning or fans, as mosquitoes fly poorly in moving air. Apply repellent to clothing as well as skin. Reapply after swimming or sweating. In high-risk areas, consult a healthcare provider about preventive medications.
Use skin repellents, wear protective clothing, sleep under a mosquito net, and eliminate standing water around the home that serves as breeding grounds.
