Dermatophytosis, better known as ringworm, is an infection of the skin, hair and sometimes claws caused by microscopic fungi called dermatophytes.
In the dormouse (Glis glis), a small rodent often kept as a pet or encountered in breeding, this disease affects the skin and coat.
It is not linked to a worm, contrary to what its name might suggest: the word “ringworm” comes from the gnawed appearance of the coat that it causes.

The most common signs are hairless areas, round or irregular, well demarcated from the rest of the coat.
The skin in this area may be red, dry, covered with small crusts or scales (small pieces of peeling skin).
Itching is sometimes present, but not always: some infected dormice do not seem bothered.
Over time, the affected skin may thicken or darken slightly.
Lesions often appear on the head, ears or legs, but can spread if left unchecked.

Causes and risk factors
Ringworm is caused by dermatophyte fungi, microorganisms that feed on the keratin present in the skin and hair.
Among rodents, the species most often involved belong to the genera Trichophyton and Microsporum.
These fungi produce very resistant spores in the environment, capable of surviving for a long time on litter, objects or surfaces.
Young dormice, elderly animals, stressed animals, poorly nourished animals or those with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop the disease after contact with the fungus.
High humidity, a poorly ventilated or overcrowded cage, as well as a lack of litter hygiene promote the survival of spores and contagion.
Contact with other rodents or animals that are already carriers also increases the risk.
Transmission
Contamination occurs by direct contact with an infected animal, or indirectly via litter, a cage, equipment or hands contaminated by spores.
The spores can persist for several months in the environment, which explains the recurrence of contamination even after partial cleaning.
The disease is zoonotic: it can be transmitted to humans and other domestic animals.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian examines skin lesions and may use a special lamp (Wood's light) that sometimes makes certain fungi glow, although this test is not one hundred percent reliable.
The definitive diagnosis is based on a sample of hair or scales sent to the laboratory for fungal culture or more rapid PCR type analysis.
Direct microscopic examination of the hairs can also guide the diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment is based on antifungals applied locally to the skin, sometimes combined with general antifungal treatment prescribed by the veterinarian depending on the severity.
Thorough cleaning and regular disinfection of the environment (cage, accessories, litter) are essential to avoid relapses.
The duration of treatment is generally quite long and must be respected until the end, even if the lesions appear to have healed earlier.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintaining a clean, dry and well-ventilated cage limits the survival of spores.
Isolating any new animal before introducing it into a group helps identify a possible infection before it spreads.
Washing your hands after handling a sick or suspected animal, and regularly disinfecting equipment, reduces the risk of transmission.
A suitable diet and a low-stress environment support the animal's natural defenses.

Without treatment, lesions can spread to a large part of the body.
Secondary bacterial infections are possible if the animal scratches and damages the skin.
In an already weakened animal, the disease can delay healing and prolong general discomfort.

Persistent itching or excessive licking of a specific area.
Any member of the household with suspicious skin lesions after contact with the animal.
Transmission to humans
