Obesity is an excess accumulation of body fat that affects many dogs and cats, especially those living in apartments. It represents an imbalance between the energy consumed and the energy expended by the animal. It is one of the most common nutritional disorders in pets in Tunisia and around the world.

We observe visible weight gain, difficulty feeling the ribs under the skin, rapid shortness of breath with exercise and a reduction in physical activity. The animal may also show fatigue, difficulty moving or jumping, and sometimes respiratory problems.

Causes and risk factors
The main cause is a diet that is too rich or too abundant in relation to the animal's real needs. Lack of exercise, sterilization without adjustment of the ration, as well as certain genetic or hormonal factors can also promote weight gain.
Animals that are sterilized, sedentary or fed high-calorie foods are more exposed. Certain breeds of dogs and cats are genetically predisposed, as are older animals whose metabolism slows down. Excessive treats and table scraps also increase the risk.
Transmission
Obesity is not a contagious disease and is not transmitted from one animal to another. It results solely from the eating habits and lifestyle of the animal concerned.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
If you notice that your pet is gaining weight or appears overweight, it is important to consult a veterinarian to assess their situation and obtain appropriate advice. The veterinarian will be able to propose a personalized food and activity plan according to the needs of the animal.
Prevention
A balanced diet adapted to the age, breed and activity level of the animal is essential to prevent Obesity. It is recommended to avoid excess treats, maintain regular physical activity and monitor the animal's weight periodically.
