Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a microscopic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the superficial layers of the skin where it tunnels and lays its eggs. It is this activity, as well as the body's allergic reaction to the parasite's droppings, that causes the itching and lesions.
Young individuals, weakened or already sick animals, and high-density populations are more exposed.\n\nClose contact with other wild carnivores carrying the parasite, notably the red fox, is considered a significant risk factor in the spread of the disease in the natural environment.\n\nA harsh winter aggravates the progression of the disease in already affected animals, due to the loss of thermal insulation.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly by direct contact between infested animals, but also indirectly through the environment (dens, roosts, vegetation) contaminated by mites recently detached from a host.\n\nContact with other carrier wild species, such as foxes, can play a role in the spread between populations. The disease can be transmitted to humans by direct contact, causing transient scabies (zoonosis).
