Animals living at high density, in captivity, or in care facilities where crowding is greater are more exposed. A weakened immune system (young age, stress, other illness, malnutrition) promotes more severe infestation. Contact with wild populations already carrying the mite is a major risk factor in natural settings.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through direct contact between infested animals, but also indirectly through a contaminated environment (burrows, bedding, objects) where the mite can survive for a few days away from its host. Contact with other susceptible species (foxes, dogs, other marsupials) in the same geographic area can promote spread.
Diagnosis and care
