Causes and risk factors
Toxoplasmosis is caused by a single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. This parasite has a complex life cycle involving the cat (the definitive host, the only animal in which the parasite can reproduce and produce infectious forms called oocysts) and many intermediate hosts, of which the spotted-tailed quoll is one. The quoll most often becomes infected by ingesting oocysts present in the environment, contaminated by cat feces, or by consuming prey (small mammals, birds) that itself carry the parasite in the form of cysts in their tissues. Once ingested, the parasite crosses the intestinal wall and can spread throughout the body, with particular affinity for the nervous system, eyes, lungs, and heart muscle.
The main risk factor is the presence of domestic or feral cats in the quoll's environment, whether in its natural habitat or in a wildlife care and conservation facility. Consumption of contaminated wild prey also increases risk. Stress from captivity, transport, or unsuitable cohabitation, along with young age or an immune system weakened by another disease, promote the development of severe clinical forms. Captive breeding in facilities where the risk of cross-contamination with cats is not controlled is a documented risk factor in conservation management.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through ingestion of oocysts present in the environment contaminated by feces from infected cats, or through consumption of prey (rodents, birds) carrying tissue cysts of the parasite. Transmission from mother to young during pregnancy or nursing is also possible. The disease is not directly contagious from one quoll to another through simple contact.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical and laboratory findings. The veterinarian first observes suggestive neurological, ocular, or respiratory signs. Blood tests can be used to detect antibodies directed against the parasite. In some cases, direct examination of biological fluids (such as cerebrospinal fluid) or tissue samples obtained by biopsy may reveal the parasite itself. Molecular biology tests (PCR) that search for the parasite's DNA are increasingly used to confirm diagnosis, particularly in wildlife care facilities or zoological parks. Necropsy, when the animal has died, often confirms the diagnosis by revealing characteristic lesions in the brain, lungs, or liver.
Treatment
Treatment relies on antiparasitic medications specific to Toxoplasma gondii, combined as needed with supportive care such as fluid therapy, oxygen therapy in cases of respiratory distress, or anticonvulsants for neurological seizures. Management must be tailored by a veterinarian specializing in wildlife or exotic animal medicine, given this species' particular sensitivity to certain medications.

Prevention
In wild animals, prevention relies primarily on controlling populations of stray domestic cats and feral cats in areas where quolls live, since cats are the source of environmental contamination. In wildlife care facilities or zoological institutions, all contact between quolls and cats must be avoided, the source and sanitary quality of meat used as food must be checked, and cat access to enclosures and stored food must be restricted. There is no available vaccine against this disease in this species.
