Sarcoptic mange is a skin disease caused by a tiny mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the surface layer of the skin. In the squirrel monkey, also called the squirrel monkey, this parasitosis causes severe itching and skin lesions which can quickly worsen if nothing is done.\nThis mite is very contagious between animals living in groups, which makes monitoring important in breeders, zoological parks or private collections of primates.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a microscopic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, invisible to the naked eye. The female tunnels into the epidermis to lay her eggs, which triggers an inflammatory reaction and intense itching in the host.
Animals living in groups or in close captivity are more exposed due to frequent contact.\nA weakened immune system, significant stress, malnutrition or concomitant disease increase susceptibility to infestation and the severity of lesions.\nThe introduction of a new, uncontrolled animal into a colony is a frequent source of contamination.
Transmission

Without treatment, the lesions can spread throughout the body and become superinfected by bacteria, leading to oozing and painful wounds.\nWeight loss, general weakening and a drop in immunity can set in, making the animal more vulnerable to other diseases.\nIn severe and neglected cases, the outcome can be fatal, particularly in young or already weakened animals.
