Signs are often subtle at first. Progressive weight loss may be observed despite sometimes retained appetite, dull and poorly maintained plumage, and general fatigue with the bird being less active during fishing. Digestive problems such as abnormal droppings or decreased food intake may develop. In young birds or weakened individuals, infestation can lead to stunted growth or marked weakness. In advanced cases, dehydration and significant lethargy are possible.

Causes and risk factors

Several groups of intestinal worms can affect fish-eating birds, notably roundworms (nematodes) and flatworms such as tapeworms and flukes. These parasites often use fish or other aquatic prey as intermediate hosts, which explains the frequency of this disease in a bird whose diet consists exclusively of small fish.

Birds living in areas where water quality is poor or rich with infected intermediate hosts face increased risk. A weakened immune system, young age, concurrent illness, or significant stress (captivity, injury) increase the likelihood of developing severe infection. Overcrowding in wildlife rehabilitation centers or aviaries may also promote reinfection.

Transmission

Infection occurs primarily through ingestion of fish or aquatic invertebrates carrying parasitic larvae. It is not directly transmissible from one kingfisher to another without passing through these intermediate hosts present in the aquatic environment.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Prevention relies mainly on maintaining a healthy aquatic environment and monitoring the general condition of birds admitted to rehabilitation centers. In captivity, regular veterinary screening of feces enables early detection of infestation. Water quality and controlled sourcing of fish used for feeding are important steps to reduce risk.

Severe untreated infestation can lead to severe malnutrition, anemia, intestinal blockage in rare cases, and general debilitation that makes the bird more vulnerable to predators or secondary infections.
